I liked the 'Salem's Lot short story quite a bit. I should track it down and reread it.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the Martin books. There are certain characters I like, but on average, I'm just finding the books ok, and not worth all the hype they've been getting. The second book seems to have smoother writing than the first, but I am still finding plenty of irksome turns of phrase.
