shanmonster | Dancing in Place

Today was another modelling day, and my last one of the year for the two first-year drawing classes. The atmosphere was pretty laid-back, and a stereo was brought in. Unfortunately, the music put in this morning was Ani Difranco. I don't know what it is about her voice, but it completely sets my teeth on edge. Her warbling, wobbling, nasal incantations drive me up the freaking wall. I'm sure she's a very nice person, though (if she keeps her lips together).

In the afternoon, I took control of the stereo and plopped in some Arabic pop. Although I don't believe anyone in the class was familiar with the tunes, I could see them perking up, and even dancing a little in place. I had a difficult time holding still. My body wants to dance when I hear certain rhythms. It's a conditioned response, particularly when one of the songs in my performance repertoire comes on. And there are two of 'em on this cd: Rachid Taha's "Habina" and Hossam Ramzy's "Aziza." You try holding perfectly still while listening to those!

At one point, a discussion of Canadian music erupted. I'm not very Canadian in my tastes, I'm afraid. The standard Canadian bands that most young Canadians love just don't do it for me. I listed the Canadian bands I didn't like: Tragically Hip, Great Big Sea, Eric's Trip, Barenaked Ladies....

I was interrupted by one of the artists. "But you ARE a barenaked lady!"

Ha ha ha.

I'll have you know I wasn't entirely naked. I was wearing a lovely necklace.
