It's an old tale, but still a funny one: No 2-Dollar Bills at Taco Bell.

You've heard of tinfoil beanies being worn to prevent alien brain waves or whathaveyou, but did you know Andrew Jackson sometimes wears them, too? You see, if you have some of that newfangled American paper money, rest assured that a dead president is spying on you, and you can either wrap him in tin foil, or explode his eye to make him stop (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] f00dave).

Ok, so maybe the money isn't spying on you, and the metal strip is just an anti-counterfeit measure, but still, the story is pretty funny....

Pet spider kills its owner: How many ridiculous things can you find in this article? First of all, a single black widow spider bite is unlikely to kill a healthy adult. Secondly, how on earth could anyone ascertain that's what killed him in the first place, if he'd been devoured by reptiles and insects? Had the fateful bitemark been solemnly set aside by the other creepy-crawlies? Thirdly, this looks more like a scene out of Eight Legged Freaks than anything else. Fourthly, the article is in a tabloid, fer chrissake! So why am I bothering? Not a clue.

I found a few charming vintage images which may interest you. It's a rather eclectic grouping, but there are a few commonalities--the female form being the predominant one. )

How does a famous little verse--the trouble with a kitten is THAT/eventually it becomes a CAT--get so incredibly lost in translation? At the end of the translation process, it comes out as the unlikely "The rock, that one is later the whole cat to the interior of the difficulty of the cat of the boy, repaired."

Try out your favourite phrases and see what happens! Here are a few choice translations from well-known literature/songs. The person who can tag the most original phrases, or even the books/songs/poems they are from, will win a prize! I can come up with something good. I have lots of books, music, etc. kicking around. To make it slightly easier, I will eschew the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean translation iterations.

  1. "The eyes of my reputation of the mountain extend, the end to come from getlteman."
  2. "That light of the window is outer broken of here?"
  3. "Brillig I gave to Twas and of toves of gyre of the slithey and the forms gimble you in the honeycomb."
  4. "Three small ones of cementation were lost their gloves and had begun to shout towards outside."
  5. "Task that never considers a poetry enough that the tree."
  6. "The night to the interior of the scale without clouds and skies starry enters the beauty like."
  7. "Since then which it could not arresting for the inoperative women, they arrested me for me."
  8. "I make the examinación to the legend of the ring, exactly if I do not know the direction."
  9. "Unhappyly defective Yorrick! It could make it, Horatio."
  10. "It had a man of Nantucket in the past."

Bonus round:

  • "The Oh Canada. Our earth to the house and the natural one."

I shall post the answers and the winners in a few days. I don't expect anyone to get them all, but at least a couple of them are identifiable as is.
