Today, I...
Jul. 2nd, 2004 12:41 am- Wore my just-made purple choli, my red, black, and white silk skirts, and a tasseled tribal belt to work
- Made a strawberry and rose quartz black velvet choker
- Was serenaded by a group of Mormons singing offkey songs about God. Afterwards, a middle-aged Mormon woman came up to me and ministered briefly while complimenting me on my dancing.
- Watched in amusement as Noa, my Israeli co-worker, was dressed up as an Irish-Canadian pioneer. Was even more amused when she turned a Canadian flag into a galabiyah which really didn't go with the 19th-century-style brown floral dress she was wearing.
- Danced, zilled, zaghareeted, played kasiklar, and did basic tahtib forms for a few hours with
elanya,
littlekeltie,
longpig, and
random_echoes. I used a bokken for my tahtib, which is just as funny as watching Noa go through her aikido forms while in colonial garb.
- Bonked myself really hard in the head with a bamboo cane while dancing raqs assaya. I think a tourist was taking my picture at the critical moment.
- Was asked if my Natacha Atlas music was from India
- Put out a tip basket, but no one gave us any money. Next time, I'll make a sign: "Starving belly dancers! Help keep us in curves!"
- Told the story of how Baubo made Demeter laugh to a woman and her enraptured young daughter
- Was asked by two people if I am Turkish
- Went out for a raspberry smoothie
- Splurged on a new dance top (bright red with black beading)
- Lined up a whole bunch of prospective new dance students
- Got my name in with Cultures as a performer for whenever they want to do a cultural celebration
- Rode in a jeep with the top down along with
littlekeltie. We yelled "Whoo!" at people as we drove along, and they yelled "Whoo!" back. I've always wondered what being a Whoo-girl was like. Now I know.
- Had a henna party.
snowy_kathryn did a huge floral design on my back, but I don't know if the colour is going to darken sufficiently. I also did my own hand, and for the first time ever, did a good job. I'm proud of it! It's also getting darker by the minute. I hope it's perfect for tomorrow.
- Went out for ice cream while the henna on my back was drying. The sticky, tacky sensation made me think this must be what bukkake feels like. When the ice cream lady asked me what I'd like, I almost said "A small bukkake in a cone." Thankfully, I caught myself and asked for orange cream supreme, instead
- Partook in Innu throat-singing with Nigel
- Watched Canada Day celebration fireworks
