So tonight I was at kung fu class out in a soccer field. I went through my sword form on my own while waiting for the others to show up. When I saw the others arrive, I balanced my sword on my head and walked down a small hill to meet them. A couple of the guys had never seen me balance a sword before, so I got Dmitri to try it. He could walk around with it on his head, but demurred when I suggest he try a few slow dragons with it balanced there. That's when Pete asks me, "Can you do a walking arrow stance with it on your head?"

"I think so," I said, then plonk the sword on my head and travel in a nice and low arrow across the field.

Impressed, Pete said, "That's really good!"

"Wanna try?"

"Naa. I don't think I can do that."

And with that, he began the warmup for the class proper.

Later on, we workied on joint locks and takedowns. My partner was Jason, a buff guy who's about five or six inches taller and fifty or sixy pounds heavier than me. We're practicing this odd movement where the attacker comes at you with a punch, and you counter by pulling their knees out from under them. I'm doing pretty well at this, and then Sifu Danny tells us to add a shoulder to it. So I ram Jason's solar plexus with my shoulder and yank him by the knees.

A loud squawk comes from him and he slams down on his back. He rolls around on the ground a bit while I quickly squat down to make sure he's uninjured. I'd knocked the wind out of him, and I hadn't even been going anywhere near full force! He was ok, aside from his pride, at least. I think he was happy no one really saw what had happened, but I was a little chagrined. Come on, now! That was a magnificent takedown, and he was even ready for it!

I can't help but feel pretty chuffed.

Anyhow, it was unbearably hot out there when we started practice, and then, about halfway through, a most delicious wind blew the hot sweat right off us. Then came a cool mist. Practicing forms in this was absolutely delightful. We went through tiger snake form again, and the rain began in earnest during gung gee. I thought it was the best practice ever, but the thunder and lightning shut us down. It was a year ago today that a little girl was struck down by the thunder god in a local soccer field.

Most people wandered off, but I stayed to watch Dmitri do his monkey form. I like the lightness of it. I think I'll get him to teach it to me. It looks like the exact opposite of the heavy and hard style of gung gee.

Afterwards, I went home and, during the thunderstorm, danced around the livingroom to VNV Nation. I worked on my zilling, my laybacks, and my candle dance, but not necessarily all at the same time.
