shanmonster: (Dance Monkey Dance!)
Today's clip features several dancers from the late 80s to early 90s. The dance style is vogue classique. Vogueing was popularized by Madonna, but here are the innovators who made it catch her eye: Willi Ninja, José and Luis Xtravaganza, et al from the New York houses. Most of the vogueing here is old style, with a bit of new style thrown in.

If I'm getting this right, old style had longer pauses between movements, which required more stability and perfection of movement. New style incorporates faster movements and contortionism. I think I have that right, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

And if you know about vogue, can you please tell me what "cunt" means? I think it may mean a woman who is vogueing, or a man who is really pulling off a spectacular female impersonation, but I'm unsure.

My vogueing education has been picked up by way of clips, reading jargon-riddled ripostes, and a single viewing of Paris is Burning. I know I like a lot of what I'm seeing, and I do see elements of it in the so-called East Coast Tribal style belly dance (which I think would be more suitably called New York-style tribal fusion).
