I used to grow potatoes in old tires - it works but it's a fair amount of work for a couple of buck's worth of spuds. Nowadays I save my small garden space for vegetables that are more expensive, or are better picked absolutely fresh - spinach, kale, lettuce, herbs. Look up "square foot gardening" - a few books have been written on just this subject.
