shanmonster: (Lost in a velvet morass)
It's wet and squishy outside, and it's also wet and squishy inside, namely, in my socks. I still need to walk up to campus tonight, but I don't want my feet to get any more soggy. I hope I have a pair of duck boots somewhere, but I'm not counting on it. I'm meeting f00 at 7:00 so we can go see a play. I haven't been to the theatre in far too long. It's practically unconscionable, considering how I'm a drama graduate who pretty much lived and breathed theatre for years. Now, I just don't have the time to be in plays. They eat your life.

This morning I finally gave my presentation on tulle-bi-telli. This was a bit of a surprise, because I wasn't scheduled to do so for another two weeks. But since I was prepared, I didn't mind doing it. The presentation went very well, and I'm sure I'll get a great mark on it. This, believe it or not, was the first visual presentation I've ever given. It seems odd that I could have made it through this many years of post-secondary arts education without having given some sort of slide show. I'm sure there will be more in the future.

Our class had a demonstration in the creation of mokume gane this afternoon. I learned that my earlier attempts at creating it were all wrong! No wonder my stuff didn't turn out right. My trials by guesswork were wasteful of metal. Ah well. At least I got some soldering practice out of it, hmm? So now I need to make a 2"x2" piece of mokume gane by the end of the term. Maybe I can make it this week. And if it turns out, perhaps I can use it on my hollowform bracelet project (which is scaring the bejeezus out of me!).

I handed in my jewellery design project today. Part of my class time is spent critiquing one another's work. I don't mind this part. I take constructive criticism well, and am comfortable with telling people what I like or dislike about their work. Nevertheless, I was pissed off at one of my fellow student's reactions to it. During the break, she asked me why on earth I'd choose to do my rendering on vellum. This is a fair enough question, since vellum is very difficult to paint on. So I told her I did it because I needed the practice, and wanted to improve. She then called me a damned fool, and kept going on about how stupid I was to do such an idiotic thing. And the kicker is she wasn't kidding. She was being a total bitch.

Sometimes this woman is really nice, and goes out of her way to be helpful. And other times, she is the cattiest she-beast in the city. What's with that?

Anyhow, my jewellery design met with the instructor's approval (after a little bit of highlight work), but I have to come up with a title for it. I think "Totally Tubular" is an awful name, so do you have any suggestions?

I like "Totally Tubular". But then, I like funny names.

There's a whole bunch of ways to make mokume game. I don't know what you were doing, but some do involve solder- which is, when you think of it, just another alloy of silver. The soldered kinds aren't quite as nice to work with in some ways as the fused, but it's more reliable with some combinations of metal.

I'll want to see a pic of your mokume game when you do it! :)

The way we were shown uses milled-down solder sandwiched between silver and copper, lightly coated with yellow flux, and then the whole stack is bound together tightly.

I'll post pictures if it comes out half decently!

I think I may go with Totally Tubular. I've already got another ring I've named The Mexican Taxi. I'm still trying to find a name for my rivetted abalone and cuttlecast ring. Maybe something stupid like Sandbar. I dunno....

You know, I read your post all the time and i don't think I've ever commented. Reading about your jewelry work is facinating. Up there with pigeons and dance!

Thanks! I'll keep posting on it, for sure. I'm at school right now, noodling about with several tentative projects (mokume gane, bracelet research, and a possible ring designed to look like a creepy eyestalk). I have to make a hollowform bracelet, and if my mokume gane turns out, perhaps I'll incorporate some of it in the bracelet.

Hollowform -- brrr, that's scarrry! You are a braver woman than I. Mind you, I haven't ever had it assigned as homework, but the daughter of the elderly gent to whom I apprenticed took a fiendish delight in telling me about all of her hollowform pieces that turned into little explodey things on the soldering block. Gave me the shivery willies, she did.

BTW, I took the liberty of friending you. Hope you don't mind!

It is scary!

I hope I don't inadvertently solder myself an exploding hand grenade. Eep.
