shanmonster: (For goodness sakes. I've got the....)

Did you miss me? I missed me.

I was away all weekend in Moncton visiting Sephira and John. I went up for a dance workshop and Full Moon bellydancing, then just stayed up for a couple days to hang out with them.

The trip there was interesting. I was in a car with [livejournal.com profile] elanya, Siobhan, [livejournal.com profile] snowy_kathryn, and [livejournal.com profile] random_echoes, and at some point along the highway, we were passed by a large white rental van. As the van pulled past, something about it caught my eye. I glanced up, and in the window on the passenger side was a heavily tattooed arm holding a can of Molson Canadian. The arm tipped the can up, and beer poured down into the arm's owner's gullet.

"Did you see that?" someone asked.

Eager to see what was going on, [livejournal.com profile] random_echoes sped the car up and we pulled back alongside the van. But now, instead of a tattooed arm, we saw a hairy-cracked naked arse pressed against the glass. We kept accelerating, and pulled back ahead of the van. For a few miles, every time we'd peek back through the window, we'd see a scrawny man arse pressing white against the windscreen.

Full Moon dancing, indeed.

When we did arrive in Moncton, we were a couple of minutes late for the workshop. We were joined a bit later by another of my students, Carol. The workshop dealt with candle dance, and although none of the movements were new or difficult for me, it was interesting watching them being explained. Sephira's explanations are different from my own, and I liked her way of breaking positions down. At the end of the class, everyone was dancing with lit candles. Despite some spilled wax, no one caught on fire, so it was all good.

Then the Full Moon dancing began. We were joined by even more dancers, most of whom seemed very shy and didn't really converse with us Fredericton dancers. [livejournal.com profile] snowy_kathryn, and [livejournal.com profile] random_echoes finally got to perform their duet to the Russian "Simarik" cover. Siobhan did a sped-up choreography to a techno version of a classic song she'd danced to before. And I had my dance-off with Sephira.

This time, I was particularly mean and chose "Alien Leisure" by Drew Neumann from the Aeon Flux soundtrack. It is generally arhythmic, and therefore a very difficult song to dance to. But Sephira had a trick up her sleeve. Apparently, she's been studying modern dance for the past while, and ended up doing a thoroughly modern performance to the difficult song.

She responded more kindly, challenging me with a Tuareg chant. I did a very slow dance culminating with a achingly slow and pulsating backbend to the floor from a standing position.

I really enjoy these challenges. Improvising to a piece never heard before is an excellent exercise in interpretation.

I ended up staying the weekend with Sephira and John. My Saturday was spent revisiting all my favourite thrift shops, and then I hung out with John. While we shared a couple of drinks at Joe Mocha, Sephira was doing performances at the nearby Moroccan café. I sipped on my strawberry smoothie, and was almost deafened by a sudden nearby explosion. The lights went out all around us.

"Transformer," I said calmly.

Behind me, I heard someone say. "A bird flew into the transformer!"

Another said, "Is it ok?"

There was much laughter at that.

The power was out for about three or four hours in the downtown area, thus putting the kibosh on the rest of Sephira's performances that night. At least she got one in before the lights died.

On Sunday, I spent the day doing yardwork with Sephira and John, digging and moving sod, then bussed home in time to go see Casablanca with [livejournal.com profile] f00dave. It was a weekend well spent.

She has a VHS or two, but nothing electronic. And we certainly don't have the hosting to support video streams, alas! Perhaps she should rename one of her vids to "Olsen-Twins-turn-18_XXX_DonkeySex.avi", and use Kazaa as a sort of distributed storage? =)
