I came out of retirement, today. This afternoon was my first time modelling for a figure drawing class in well over a year. Many of my poses were from Sup Bat Sou, and they impressed the artists and the teacher. I guess none of their models have ever used Praying Mantis style kung fu in their drawing sessions before. I told them I'd do some Hung Gar for them next week. Is this why I've been doing my martial arts training?

ha ha!
I just do kinda classic stuff, or the way I normally sit or something, usually, people end up just asking me to stay where I am when we are talking....
It's cool if you know you can hold more dynamic and angular poses, I never like to break in front of the kids, so I try to stick to stuff I know I am going to be able to hold.

Same here. I know what I can hold for 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 minutes or longer. They can get the dynamic stuff during the warmup. I've had a teacher leave me in apose too long and I've injured myself. I yelled at him that day, and he let me do anything I wanted for the rest of the class. Asshat. I swear, he's stoned all the time.

I don't choose tricky positions for long poses. I've been modelling for over fifteen years, and I think I learned that lesson within the first couple of months.

Still, I'm able to hold some stuff, like shoulder stands, for about ten minutes, and can hold a standing pose for about an hour. Practice makes perfect!

If a teacher tells me to hold an awkward pose, I'll tell him I'll hold it as long as I safely can, but no longer. I give thirty second warnings before coming out of 'em.

I once had a guy do this horizontal stand off a chair... like superman and he held that for a while.. i think it was only about 5 mins or so, but our class felt pain by watching him! I can't belive you try those crazy poses for that long!

I hate it when I let them put me in a pose. I usually do something so that they realize that I know what I am doing and they don't have to pose me, but sometimes they have some specific (usually unrealistic) picture in their minds. I do like the warm ups though, it's _almost_ like dancing....only really really slowly.
yeah stand up for your rights especially when it pertains to your health, I have come out of classes in a lot of pain bcse i wanted to do what the teacher asked for. Now I say, " I can't do that, but how about something like this?"

I don't let them put me in a pose, unless I know it's something I can hold. Once upon a time, while modelling for a painting class, I let them put me in an unnatural pose I would no longer hold for more than ten minutes. I held it for five hours.

I had huge bruises for more than a week, and was pretty crippled up.

Never again!

I never do the sculpture classes anymore either.
Right now I am taking a break from it all.
just can't stare at a hinge for 6 hours anymore....

I never want to hold a pose longer than an hour again. Bleah.

When I was learning Wing Chun we would hold certain stances for a good hour though what I found worse then just standing there was doing stuff in slow motion (taking 1 hour to go from one pose to another). Very boring stuff.

Modelling can be very boring, too.
