shanmonster: (Spasmolytic)

Naji spoke with me after my performance. He wants to get together with me to work out a two-person sword dance. It would incorporate fighting (yes, just like you wanted to do, [livejournal.com profile] elanya!). Hopefully, we'll be able to get together and develop something really interesting. Our sword styles are very different. I study kung fu sword, and he's studying European sabre. I think this could be pretty darned nifty.

He also told me that a dancer I met last summer in Moncton does butoh dance. This makes my heart sing! I need to get ahold of this Sebastien fellow again. I want to see and learn. Moncton's not so far away. Ok, so it is considering I don't have a vehicle.

Veronica Sweeney phoned me from Australia last night. It was good to hear from her! She's been studying court dancing, and thinks I'd do well at it. I must admit, the idea doesn't make me excited, but I'd certainly be willing to learn if I had the opportunity.

I spent the day playing variants of Settlers of Catan with [livejournal.com profile] f00dave, [livejournal.com profile] bloobert, and Julian. Unfortunately, once we finished the game went back to Halifax with Bloobert. It's his game. We were just babysitting it for a while. If the game weren't so bloody expensive, I'd get a copy for myself. Maybe someday....

Afterwards, Kathryn came by and we cobbled together a last-minute Thanksgiving dinner. We had mashed potatos (with cream cheese, butter, and sour cream. No calories there!), a sweet turkey curry (with applesauce and raisins), pappadums, apple cider, and cranberry Jello. Not bad, considering we hadn't had the time to shop for dinner, hmm? We finished up by watching a couple of Iron Chef battles (Guinea Fowl on Wedgwood china, and a Sea Bass tag team battle). I love the Japanese chefs the most. They look and act like Samurai of the kitchen.

And now for some linkage to pacify (Oh dear. I almost spelled it "passify") the masses:

Amusing His Lordship: Talk about hard to impress!

Girl attacked baby sitter with machete: I babysat some pretty bad kids, but at least none were psychotic.

Grandmother wrestles crocodile: Now that's a kickass granny (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] f00dave).

Monkey steals the peach: My friend Tony taught this nasty little manouevre to me years ago (thanks, Kutulu).

Frederick's Of Hollywood's blow-up bras: They also work well in case of boating accidents. To top it off, you can get extra-pointy styles.

Lanyard sent me a link to a particularly appropriate Red Meat comic strip. See what I mean?

More moms going down, to ensure grades go up! I so love the Mainichi Daily News....

I envy your dancing... Especially your sword dancing. I still don't have good enough transportation to go to classes here. I need a credit card to see about buying a bike off e-bay or something.

I have been fooling around/practicing at home(one advantage of having no furniture is lots of space!), but I always worry that I'm just developing bad habits if I don't have anyone else to work with.

If you can get some really good instructional videos and work with mirrors to check your posture, you'll have a better chance of keeping away the bad habits. Bear in mind that if something hurts (aside from sore, lazy muscles), you're doing it wrong. This style of dance should never hurt. Keep a good, upright posture, and you'll be fine.

"Classic Waiwai"?

What a disturbing coincidence... :P

"Waiwai" is the name of an alien character in [livejournal.com profile] perseity who just got put in jail for *beating* *up* a pornographer. For beating up [livejournal.com profile] xypharan's character, in fact.

Do you know about Board Game Geek?

http://www.boardgamegeek.com

What began as a board game database has become a gathering point for board game entheusiasts the world over. Of particular relevance here is their Marketplace section, where out of print games can be finally found and in-print games can often be found for discounts.

Worth a look, maybe.

I'm too broke to buy, unless it's crazy cheap. Ah well.

I'm looking at Settlers of Catan and am starting to get confused. How often will one want the 2 extra players expansion? What's your opinion on the Seafarers and Cities & Knights expansions?

I often play with four or five other gamers. With extra players, the rules change slightly. With five or more players, everyone gets to go shopping at the end of every turn. Otherwise, you end up with more than seven cards in hand very quickly.

I enjoy Seafarers and Cities & Knights, although the variants we play incorporates elements from each of the games/expansions. Seafarers is very similar, but with more of an exploration element. Cities and Knights is very different, but equally enjoyable, and the games tend to be longer.
