I'm feeling a bit better today. All that excess sleep seems to be helping out. I spent much of yesterday giving my dance shop a much-needed overhaul, and I'm still working on it. I get a small commission from
everything I sell, and I like to spend my Amazon gift certificates on dance-related materials. This is one of the main ways I
study and learn, so if you're planning on purchasing something at Amazon, please be a sweetie and buy it through my site. I
think I'll be trying out some tribal tonight with Siobhan (and snowy_kathryn too,
if she likes!). I even have links to Canadian Amazon, where applicable, although I prefer to buy from the American one. The
Canadian Amazon is sometimes achingly slow in their shipping.
While researching available books and videos, I came across the line "she crawls on her belly like a reptile." This was purportedly called out by carnies during the 1893 World Fair in Chicago in regards to the Egyptian dancers. Although I consider floorwork to be one of my specializations in oriental dance, I've yet to see a manoeuvre which would land me belly-down and wriggling like a lizard. Have you seen any moves like this? I'm stumped. Perhaps good ol' Sol Bloom just forced the dancers to do alligator impressions. I really don't know. I think I'll crosspost this question all over the place and hope for a good response.
Unfortunately, I found out today that I will not be able to hold a hafla where I teach my classes. The board of directors have decreed the space is available only for classes and seminars, and not for entertainment events. Damn. So I'm back at square one. Where shall we have our hafla? Wherever it is, it must be inexpensive. Although I don't mind not turning a profit, I can't afford to lose any money. A profit, of course, is preferable. All money made would go toward educational resources for me and the other organizers.
There is good news, however. I will be able to move my beginner classes to Sunday afternoons without any difficulties.
