Metal Smiths
Apr. 15th, 2004 09:57 pmThe other day was spent working on my hollow form bracelet. So far, it's going pretty well, although not as quickly as I had anticipated. My bracelet is made in four sections, each a quarter of a circle. I'm using thin reticulated silver on alternating walls, and the rest is twenty-gauge sterling silver. It didn't take me long to figure out that hard solder wasn't the best choice for the reticulated silver. The metal is so thin, that when I get it at high enough temperature for the solder to flow, the reticulated silver begins to melt. Ack! So I started using medium solder, and that seemed to do the trick quite nicely.
My hands are sore from all the filing I did, but were fine enough today to finish the basic construction. I soldered on half of my hinges, today. This bracelet is slow going, that's for sure. I'm using tube hinges, and setting facetted stones on both ends of all four hinges. The design is very simple, but I hope it will be elegant, as well.
The radio was on throughout the day. It's an easy rock station, which means lots of crap, played to death. It's typical for the same song to be played two or three times within a six-hour period. Lazy programming or payola? I think it's a combination of the two. Anyhow, at one point, I stopped working because I realized I was hearing Morrissey. I knew it had to be him, because he only has three or four notes he can sing, and the song had to do about how depressing it is in England, and how girls like watching cricket, or something equally Smithsian. Now, don't get me wrong. I rather like Morrissey. "How Soon is Now?" is one of my favourite songs. I also like "November Spawned a Monster." But what a whinger! Blimey!
What made the song I heard on the radio different from any other Morrissey song was the edgy use of electric guitars. Edgy. I love that word. It's the new, empty buzzword. Edgy means you're getting close to an edge, like maybe the edge of a cliff, and might fall off at any time. Art and music that are ready to fall off a cliff are very, very cool. Maybe my hollowform bracelet will be edgy. There have certainly been a few times when I was tempted to hurl it off a cliff! Stupid soldering pits and melting silver grumble grumble schnizzle grumble....
My little flock of pigeons is being evicted.
f00dave has the details.
The eBay annoyance has escalated into a full-fledged feedback war. After almost ten years of good dealings, I've finally received my first negative feedback. The seller called me a liar who wanted to keep their stuff without paying for it. I'm really not sure what gave them that notion, but ah well. I guess those are the kinds of tricks unethical dealers play when they're cornered. In any case, if you're considering purchasing something from nile_treasure, please beware that the items I purchased were both misrepresented and of poor quality. And although I would like to have gotten my money back, I wasn't ready to commit fraud by leaving false positive feedback.
I feel like an eBay martyr.
