Man, taking these out of context is hilarious. But as a big Superman fan, I have to defend SOME of these. Just by the covers, sure, there's all sorts of ideas you can get from them. More likely than not, though, I'm sure the stories within involve some kind of mind control or something like that. =) Of course, the "slap the jap" campaign was only one piece of propaganda going around those time. Captain America was the centerpiece of it. Batman had covers that asked to buy war bonds. And etcetera.

Of course, if you were to ever find a cover I'm about to describe, then I have NO explanation:

The cover has Superman throwing a Superman statue towards a meteor or something. "I've done everything I can! Only my statue can save us now! Fly Superman statue, FLY!"

That still boggles my mind.

Yes, humourous indeed. Also, as far as I can tell, all Silver Age appearances of Superman. Which isn't the same Superman as in today's comics. (The Silver Age Superman left the DC universe near the end of the Crisis on Infinite Earths series.)

Still, humourous.

But, let's face it, pre-Crisis had some atrociously bad stories (not that they don't have some now, but I tend to hold a time-traveling Bat-man as much worse then, say, Brainiac trying to take over Barbara Gordon and failing at it.)

The Silver age Superman didn't seem to spend as much time fighting crime as he did jinxing Jimmy Olsen and stopping cat fights between women with L.L. as their initials.

Did time-travelling Batman get around in a little bubble? I'm curious....

I don't believe so... I don't think it was a platform like the now infamous one Dr. Doom used (just how many super-heros ended up hitting that one point in Egypt?), but I don't think it was a bubble.

But honestly, Olsen deserved to be slapped around a bit. I never did understand why Supes would want to stop cat-fights. If I were him, I'd have just gone to get a kiddie pool and some jello and let Lois and Lana work it out.
