1. "Garden State"
2. "Crescent" by Diana Abu-Jaber
3. anything by Jesse Cook, but my favorite album is "Nomad" -- tracks 1 & 2, Introduction and Qadukka-l-Mayyas. Awesome.

If you try any, let me know what you think.

1. Cronos (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0868219/) -- "Mexican vampire flick" and "high production values" are not phrases you would normally expect to see together, but this is an excellent movie. It's directed by Guillermo del Toro ("Hellboy"). Ron Perlman plays the villain.

2. Ten Consecutive Years Living in Cars : Living, Traveling, Camping, Attending College, and Performing Surveillance in Cars----and Loving It! (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0967624800/ref=pd_bxgy_text_1/103-8884658-8688636?v=glance&s=books&st=*) by Craig S. Roberts. Rough around the edges (it cries out for an editor and Roberts is a little eccentric). But Roberts book is the best car living book written so far.

3. Waters of March (http://www.openknowledge.org/music/Susannah%20McCorkle%20-%20The%20Waters%20of%20March.mp3) by Susannah McCorkle. This song always makes me happy.

1. La Cité des enfants perdus AKA The City of Lost Children. Also starring Ron Perlman - think Hieronymus Bosch directing a steam-punk flick and you get the idea.

2. Turkish reflections - Mary Lee Settle - a travelogue. Ms. Settle has an amazing talent for describing *place*.

3. Necati Çelik - Yasemin. Necati is a master of the oud, and this album is quite a treasure. Most of the pieces are classical pieces (and not suitable for raqs sharqi) but certainly worth tracking down.

With alternates, because I don't know you well enough to know if you've already seen/read/heard these.

1. House of Flying Daggers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385004/) is the new film by Zhang Yimou, and continues in the "gorgeous and interesting" manner of Hero rather than the "gorgeous and dull" manner of most of his previous stuff

Alternately, Musa, (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275083/) a very lovely Korean film about a group of diplomats stuck in China during the Ming takeover.

Alternately, Ong Bak (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368909/), a Thai movie that could very well be chop-socky if it wasn't Thai and from 2003. I saw a version that wasn't subtitled or dubbed, but it doesn't matter. The plot is still transparent and the ability of the stuntmen is unbelievable.

2. Brigadier Gerard, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, any collection by Dorothy Parker, if on a winter's night a traveller... by Italo Calvino

3. I'd say "Juno Reactor" since it sounds like something a weirdo could dance to, but I'm sure you've already heard it, so instead I'll say RJD2, which is sometimes classified as rap, although I don't know why... it's more the sort of music Moby was famous for, except good -- "Rain" is really a nice song

Date: 2004-12-14 10:24 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com
I have yet to see House of Flying Daggers or Musa, but I watched Ong Bak a few weeks ago. I was excited about the martial arts. It's so rare to see a wire-free performance, and I really appreciate seeing people doing seemingly impossible things by merit of extreme skill.

I have a Dorothy Parker collection (prose), but little of her poetry. I haven't read Brigadier General of Calvino's book. I'll try to find them.

Juno Reactor's pretty fun. I haven't heard of RJD2. I'll look it up.

1. Sabrina (the original with Audrey Hepburn, not the Harrison Ford remake.) Metropolis is another that's high on my list.
2. The Abhorsen Trilogy (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060528737/ref=pd_sbs_b_1/102-4727585-1840967?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance) (Sabrael, Lirael, and Abhorsen), by Garth Nix. It was marketed as young adult, which apparently means that Mr. Nix was able to tell an engaging, character-driven story with no cuss words.
3. Jane Siberry (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=dp_searchBox_1/102-1959752-0682559?url=index%3Dblended&field-keywords=Jane+Siberry&x=0&y=0) - anything by her is worth a listen. She has a light, ethereal, singing voice that manages to avoid sounding whiny or annoying.

Date: 2004-12-14 10:01 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com
I haven't seen the original Sabrina, although the remake inspired me to cut all my hair off when it came out. I own Metropolis, but my copy is jittery and I get headaches when I watch it.
I'm unfamiliar with the Abhorsen books, but I'll take a look for them. I like YA books, anyhow.
I listen to Jane Siberry from time to time, and have since the early 90s.

Musa is pretty cool-looking, too. It was the first movie I saw where the action sequences were shot as for slow motion but played at normal speed; the effect is to make them noticibly clear. Since then I've seen it in a few other places. (American football broadcasts!)

I prefer Parker's poetry to her prose, for the most part; all the venom of a short story distilled into eight perfect lines.

Brigadier Gerard is /hilarious/; it's a bit like The Pink Panther movies. The White Company and Sir Nigel (also by Doyle) are good too, although they're primarily action stories with humour in them instead of being outright comedy as is Gerard.
