shanmonster: (Spasmolytic)

When I was a kid, I wanted to be Tarzan when I grew up. Fascinated by his well-developed sense of smell, I would practice smelling myself so that I could recognize my own scent.

In retrospect, it would have made an awful lot more sense to have practiced smelling anything or anyone else, but I guess I wanted to go with what was readily available.

Another of the aspects of Tarzan which intrigued me was his ability to swing through the trees and traverse supposedly insurmountable physical obstacles. I used to practice running along branches high in the air, leaping out of trees and off cliffs, tumbling, flipping, and standing on top of cantering ponies. I was getting pretty good, and my injuries were frequent but minor. With that in mind, several years ago, I learned about Parkour. Yet somehow, parkour slipped my mind until now. The idea is back again, and I want to do it, to recapture the sense of freedom I felt as a crazy tomboy.

I suspect I may be a bit too old to learn some of the more gymnastic tricks, and I wish I could rewind time so I could recommence my childhood training. I also think I'm more more breakable now than I was as a kid. The huge red bruise on my shin from kung fu last night attests to that. My leg throbs like a second heart, especially when I stand up. The big welt on my elbow, however, doesn't feel any different from the rest of my regularly-coloured arm, so maybe I'd be okay so long as I only use my top half. Hee! That being said, I think my martial arts, weight, and dance training have given me an edge I wouldn't have had, otherwise. Now I just need to find some good footwear, and perhaps wait until all the snow and ice melt.

Who wants to train with me?

Re: your reminder ...

Did you just reread Global Frequency vol. 1 when vol. 2 came out, like I did? :)

No. What is Global Frequency?

Global Frequency

Global Frequency was a 12-issue / 2 vol. GN that Warren Ellis wrote.

Global Frequency: Planet Ablaze (vol. 1) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1401202748/qid=1104955526/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/103-6518664-4389423)
Global Frequency: Detonation Radio (vol. 2) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1401202918/qid=1104955526/sr=2-2/ref=pd_ka_b_2_2/103-6518664-4389423)

To quote him:

There are a thousand and one people on the Global Frequency.

A worldwide independent defense intelligence organization with a thousand and one agents, all over the world. Anyone you know might be with them. It's the world's little open secret. You could be sitting there watching the news and suddenly hear an unusual cellphone tone, and within moments you might see your neighbor leaving the house in a hurry, wearing a jacket or a shirt with the distinctive Global Frequency symbol... or, hell, your girlfriend might answer the phone, and then put on her Global Frequency badge and promise to explain later... for all you know, they have your file, and you'll be recruited next... anyone could be on the Global Frequency, and you'd never know until they got the call...

...from Aleph, central dispatcher for the Global Frequency, getting her orders from Miranda Zero, creator and operator of the organization. Not her real name, but the only one you're getting. Her real name and identity were erased from the world's records the moment she went into business for herself. Global Frequency is run on the cash she made doing bad things in the Nineties, and on the hush money paid her by the G-8 industrialized nations for...

...for what the Global Frequency does. Clearing up after the 20th Century. Keeping an eye on the bad mad things in the dark that the public never found out about. All the black projects, the mad science, the chilly encounters with the unknown, the Cold War traps... they're all sitting there like landmines. Eventually someone will trip over one of them. Global Frequency are there to catch them when they fall, and defuse the mines before they explode into mainstream consciousness and cause more pain and horror than they already have...

Are you on the Global Frequency?

I ask because one of the agents contacted in the first volume was chosen for her skill at Parkour.

And hey ... do you really need more incentive than that to read Warren Ellis's comics?

I'd like to read that. I've been out of the comics scene since I moved to Fredericton, though. No longer managing a comics shop paired with poverty does a lot to slow down my comic fandom. I wish the local library would carry comics and graphic novels.

Heh.

I am a librarian.

I started and maintained the GN collections at two different libraries.

I also run a monthly GN discussion group for teens, and am likely going to be running one for adults soon.

Now don't you wish you went to my library.

*gleeful grin*

I do wish it. My library isn't so very hot. They take down my dance posters because "dance is not cultural", and they don't have a single Tarzan book. WTF?

Um ... WTF x 2? Dance is not cultural? No Tarzan? I think your library is plagued with Anti-Librarians from the Negaverse.

At least they have Tarzan books in the system. I'm getting Return of Tarzan via inter-library loan. However, the dance thing confuses the hell out of me.

I wanted to put up a poster on their community bulletin board advertising my Middle Eastern dance classes, but was told the board is only for cultural things, and not for money-making ventures like dance classes or cooking classes. I explained that I am not making a profit, but just covering my costs, and that Chinese cooking and Middle Eastern dance certainly qualify as cultural instruction, but the librarian says otherwise. I am unimpressed.

Perhaps if you hit her in the head really hard with the stapler on the desk you'll reconnect the logic circuit.

Hey, it works on my computer.

But don't forget to shout something kung-fuey when you do it. You know, for coolness' sake. Something like "Monkey Squishes Fly Against Coconut."

My someday-to-be 17-year-old cousin does gymnastics with horses for a hobby. Jumping on and off, doing handstands, etc. with other riders and horses.

I sooo miss that sort of stuff! I vaulted onto my horses from second story platforms (and landed softly, so as not to hurt the horses), trained them to lie down and rear up and strike on command, and all other sorts of dangerous but fun things.

How did I not hear of Parkour before?? O_O Too bad I can't get the videos at that site to work, but the stills look awfully cool!

Well, it is pretty underground, as far as I can tell. I have some videos. I might be able to send them to you via email, if you have mail that can handle large files.

Hmmm....

Cool! I'm not sure about the attachment restrictions on either, but my two addresses are clarinetdemigod@hotmail.com and Philip_Broderick@baylor.edu.

I just sent three files to your baylor.edu address.

Gmail is better. 1G storage and once the files are uploaded, it's an instant transfer to anyone else's email account.

Besides, HotMail sucks ASS, there's NO reason to be using it anymore! Give the poor guy a Gmail invite already. ;-)

Let me know if you receive them, and I'll send more. Plus, if you'd like a gmail account, let me know and I'll send you an invite. You can fit much larger files onto it.

And yeah, I don't think a Gmail account would hurt a bit. *puppy dog eyes of Gmail-invite supplication*
