Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] f00dave!

shanmonster: (Spasmolytic)

It's his 34th birthday today. I took him out for a pasta lunch yesterday (hoorah for winning gift certificates for that!), and I also got him a copy of Larry Niven's Ringworld's Children, a gift he's still grinning about.

I'm back to work this afternoon. Unfortunately, just a few minutes ago, my throat got really sore and swollen. I hope it's not a relapse. Dear god, no.

Last night, after kung fu, I had planned on visiting [livejournal.com profile] freakwoman and [livejournal.com profile] balthcat. However, for some bizarre reason, people started appearing in my apartment, and I didn't get to go out. I ended up watching a terrible Wu-Tang Clan movie called Kung Fu Hero (the font on the box makes it look like "Kung Fu Herd", which is much funnier). The dubbing was atrocious, as should be expected, but the fight scenes were generally quite interesting. The plot was incomprehensible. I think it had something to do with political unrest and a Chinese Muslim uprising; it was confusing to the nth degree.

It felt awfully good to be back at kung fu, last night. Although I couldn't make it through all the kicking drills (I'm still recovering from the flu from hell), I found the intricacies of weight placement during punches informative. I need a lot more practice in this regard.

And now for a few links!

Making Scents: What would you do if you went bowling and someone asked you to smell their balls?

Lawsuit Against David Copperfield: "David Copperfield has been using my godly powers to perform his magic." Odd.

Brady Bunch Kung Fu Hands-On: Also very odd.

Zero Gravity Cat: Cats don't like being in zero G. I'm not surprised.

Man with two penises can't get any loving...: "A German man, who persuaded doctors to give him a second penis, lost his wife after he showed her the result."

101 Unuseless Japanese Inventions: I wish I could see them more clearly.

Bellydance Movement Vocabulary: Maybe I'll try some of these combinations in class some day....

I find that 'cat in zero gravity' one very disturbing indeed. In fact I'd go so far as to say it amounts to animal cruelty.

I must admit I fail to see the purpose of putting the cat in that situation.

It may be the quality of the video itself. I can see the value in taking an animal up to see how the disorientation affects it... but it's the way he seems to throw (not just push) the cat at the side of the vessel. That's what got me frowning right away. But once I watched a couple more times I wondered if maybe the speed was a bit exaggerated...

I have watched it a few times too, and the poor cat looks petrified to me; its tail is like an exclamation mark and its claws are splayed in the typical 'flight or fight' stance. And yes, it is 'thrown' against the wall, not just once, but twice in this short piece of video. In my opinion, and I realise it is just mine, there is no value in treating an animal in such a way. 'Science' should not be abusing any species for some dubious benefit. It upset me greatly.

It's zero-g, you can't just let go an expect it to head towards a surface. Further, I think it looks more like "throwing" because of the stance the man had to assume for him to push it towards the wall. Again, keeping in mind this is zero-g, he has to exert a fair amount of force because (from the looks of it) he is unanchored as well. Pushing the cat is like pushing himself and the cat's combined mass. Looking at it, the speed of the cat is really not as great as it looked upon first viewing.

This is not to say I personally condone it or anything, just that the physics involved may make it look disproportionately cruel.

Happy Birthday to f00dave!

I hope you are not going to be sick again with the flu from hell. I haven't had a lot of time for LJ lately but I have read that you were awfully sick. Hope you'll feel better soon!

Now that man with two penises sure must be a hoax...?!

There's a store in the local J-town near me that has the 101 Unuseless Inventions book in stock. There are some deeply odd things contained within...

I dunno, the telescoping coffee spoon, if nothing else, looked actually potentially useful.

I am glad the 'two penises' article did not come with a photo. :^P
