I wish I had the money for it, too. f00 picked up a bottle in England last year. It was the most inexpensive brand, and it still cost a fortune. It was his only souvenir of the stay, though, so I guess that's ok.
I know you're not actively reading my journal anymore, because you have 87-bazillion friends on LJ, but my most recent entry is a tribute to Stan Rogers, which you and Dave should appreciate as none of my other friends would, alas.
My regular Friday night hangout has a resident singer whose voice and style is perfect for Stan Rogers' music. I just need to introduce him to it.
Definitely driving to Halifax again this summer. When the trip is closer, we'll talk. Would love to spend another afternoon with you and Dave on the way. Tricia is still talking about the compliments she gets for the earrings you made!
I think the absinthe is not bad, but I prefer other, less expensive drinks: port, creme de cacao, Strongbow, etc. I think most people's attraction to it is its reputation, really.
Please let us know when you're back in town again! It would be good to get back together.
Absinthe is kind of foul on its own, but it mixes surprisingly well with red bull or hot chocolate. And I guess that, even taken alone, absinthe is rarely more foul than work.
I had it the old fashioned way: with water poured through sugar cubes. I find it very strong, and couldn't drink much of it (unlike f00 who got right totally fucked on the stuff!).
And work was uncommonly foul. It was nonstop calls from beginning to end of shift, complete with computer problems. When there were only five minutes of my shift remaining, my voice had faded to a croak, and I could no longer speak.
I was given some, well I dont know...battery acid? a few years ago at a Ren Faire in Las Vegas and they called it "Homemade Absinthe". It may have melted my toenails from the inside out but the costumes looked really pretty.
You can purchase low-thujone absinthe in liquor stores in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta, and BC (possibly also elsewhere). There are a few brands I've seen, including Hill's (http://hillsabsinth.com/) and Absente. Basically it has to have no or very low wormwood content to be sold here - it's not illegal, just regulated. In Europe, most countries allow a higher thujone content.
If you want the same basic experience, just drink ouzo. Both taste like nasty, nasty black liquorice ;)
"Thujone" eh? Then I guess what I had really was battery acid w/a high alcohol content...two years later and I still shudder thinking about the aweful taste and have flashbacks of the pretty colors.
But now I know I dont want it (Absinthe). I dont like licorice or ouzo or sambuca or anise flavoring etc.
My Canadian girlfriend (we both live in Lost Angeles now) is under the belief that it's kind of like porn in middle america - illegal to sell, illegal to produce, but if a cache of it somehow miraculously materializes in your possession, it's not illegal to own or consume.
The alcohol is 45% for the "cheap" stuff. Only gets higher from there. The flavour is very much licorice. As for non-boozy effects, it's *supposed* to make you somewhat high, but it had no such effect on me; I just got really, REALLY, *REALLY* drunk. Presumably because there's so little of the active ingredient in the cheap stuff. If I ever get a chance to drink some of the real shit, I'll get Shan to pot about it. ;-)
