About a month ago, right about when I started playing with poi, I balanced a tennis ball on my head. I was able to do a tentative shimmy and a few cautious level changes. Then, minutes later, I couldn't repeat the act.
I ought to start practicing that on my breaks, once I have my poi combinations down. I'm not sure what I can do with this trick, but if I can consistently balance a ball on my head, that's an end unto itself, dontcha think?
I also plan on bringing a short staff to work, soon. Then I can bone up on my staff-handling techniques. There are a few around the body passes I need to work on, and I haven't worked on tosses since last summer. I'd bring my zills to practice, but I suspect I'd drive people batty.
Work has been going speedily for the past few days. I hope this trend continues. It makes the day much more bearable. I've been reading a whole lot about dance and dancers, between calls. Too bad I couldn't actually be dancing instead of reading about it, but this is better than sitting on my arse and drooling during my downtime.
When I practice poi outside on my breaks, I've been attracting an audience. I see people watching from windows (co-workers, especially), from idling cars in the parking lot, and I've also seen people gazing at me intently from nearby apartment buildings. They even lean on fences to watch.
It's a little bit daunting, because I'm still experimenting and figuring stuff out. I still bonk myself occasionally, and the balls still have mid-air prangs. In performance, I just do the stuff I know I can do. When I practice, I do the stuff I don't know. Plus, I find it's harder without music. I have a soundtrack of applicable uptempo music playing in my head, but it's not quite the same thing as having a nearby sound system with good, heavy beat.
I've been working steadily on my dance costume. The girdle base is pretty much complete. I hope I made it large enough. I usually make them too large, but this time, I may have made it too snug. We shall see. I purchased a bunch of red chainette tassels on my lunch break. I wanted gold, but the red ones were on sale for fifty cents apiece, so I'll see what they look like with the costume. If I don't like them, I can always use them for something else. Photos of the finished product are subject on its completion, of course....
