shanmonster: (For goodness sakes. I've got the....)
I've only just realized this week that my poi skills are entirely transferable. I can do the same stuff with floggers, and also, with a bit of tinkering, with short swords. Now I just need to find a couple of short swords to practice with. Butterfly swords or maybe long daggers might make a good choice. I wonder if I can find an inexpensive set. I can definitely see myself using this in performance.

You could also use sais, but they weren't exactly intended to be used as a blade. You may be able to get a pair cheaply. I could even sell you an old pair if you figure they'd do.

That could be an idea, too! I wonder how well they'd translate into a dance performance?

Honestly, I don't know. They don't seem made for slashing, but that would be up to the artist to determine.

The best idea, (and I know that you'd do this anyway) is see if you can't borrow a pair, or if there's a sporting store or martial arts store (yeah, in Freddy, HA!) Try'em out to see how they'd work. :)

If you guys are starting to make your own toys, this one is fun.

Suede and the strips are 1 1/2 inches wide. IT's a light thud. Good for back massages after a stressful day.

I have a 1" strip version that looks really similar, just braided and knotted the handle last night, actually. The leather was from an old (black) jacket.

I'm really getting into this leatherworking thing! Pictures to follow soon on my LJ. ;-)

YAY.

Consider yourself friended. (mostly because I'm so ADD I didn't do it before)

Groovy. Now you, too, get to read about my BDSM, photography, and research-realted posts. It's a scary journal. ;-)

Can't be as scary as my zombie, Civil war Pirate dream I just had.

Now you're talkin'! Ok...admission time: I worked for years in various fetish clubs displaying some of those same entirely transferable skills. My signature became 2-handed flogger techniques that were rooted in...you guessed it...a closing salute for paired swords from a Kung Fu form.

T'ai C'hi Shortswords: they come in a pair and the poi movements are very like the T'ai C'hi forms. Get the SHORT swords, or you might nick your forearms...

That sounds a lot like the chinese Sword Dance. "All maneuvers are performed while leaping - both feet must leave the ground - and require precise slashes with two swords over, under, and around the body." (Barry Hughart, Bridge of Birds)

That sounds spiffy! Too bad the only classical Chinese dance taught around here is only for little kids....

Nine Section Chain Whip. It is exactly like a poi, and completely transferable. Look up some wushu performances that include the chain whip and you will be pleasantly surprised. There are also double chain whip forms (like with 2 chains), which transfers even better. One good spot to look is www.wushucentral.com

enjoy!

Woohoo! I've always like the look of a chain whip. Now I have a double excuse to try it out!
