shanmonster: (For goodness sakes. I've got the....)
Yesterday was full of people. [livejournal.com profile] fusty_cabbages, Sephira, John, [livejournal.com profile] seraph_x, [livejournal.com profile] f00dave, and [livejournal.com profile] cynebeah filled my apartment throughout the day. And my dance class had additional people (thank goodness!). Although I'm not a terribly social person, the company was good.

I finished reading George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman and the Redskins. I'm always afraid that the books won't be as good as I remembered, and then I'm filled with the delicious realization that I'm dead wrong. I love the Flashman books. Flashman is such an unmitigated bastard, and I love him for it.

Now I've started on Stephen R. Donaldson's Lord Foul's Bane, which I don't think I've read since 1989. It was one of my favourite books of all time, but now the writing style is a bit too overdone to appeal to me that much. What is with the overuse of words like "mordant" and "verdant," plus all those overblown adverbs, anyhow? Ah well. I guess I'll see if the story can still win me over soon enough.

Ugh. I'm suddenly feeling like total shite. Did frosh plague just catch up with me? I hope not. I don't think I have any sick days left.

Omigosh! YAY for Flashman! I keep getting anxious that Fraser's going to die before documenting Flashman's participation in the US Civil War.

Wow. Another Flashman fan. Who'd have thought it?

I'm afraid he'll kick it, too. That's why I've been spacing out my reading of the books. And to think I only found out about the books serendipitously!

Me too! Me too! ^_^

I used to think rather highly of Donaldson, but the luster is gone.

I'm enjoying the book, but nowhere near the same degree as I once did. I can't see myself wanting to read it again after this time.

Yeah. It's got some good stuff, but they don't seem to offset the rest enough after the first exposure.

I hope I didn't give you the cold that has just passed from Jasmin to Rob...eek. Maybe I'm like Typhoid Mary, except without the typhoid, and my name is not Mary.

You might not have given it to me, but someone did. I probably got it from Dave or someone at work. There are plenty of sick people here. Gah.

When I met my boyfriend online, neither of us were going by our real names, and one of the first books he recommended to me was The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. He was a bit perturbed when he found out my name was Lena.

Lena is one of the more unfortunate characters in the series, to be sure.

I've never been able to get into Donaldson's stuff. I even tried it again (relatively) recently, and it just didn't take.

It's certainly not for everyone. He's just so friggin' gloomy.
