When I was a little girl, I took the bible stories and allegories literally. I knew that the road to destruction was wide and easy to tread, and that the path to salvation was narrow, cramped, and difficult to find. So I used to go outside in my gum rubber boots and tromp all through the woods looking for the latter.
Although I did find many cramped, difficult-to-follow trails, I never did find the right one. However, once, while driving to the Kingdom Hall, I had the sudden realization that the paved highway leading to the Sunday meeting was obviously the road to damnation. My parents weren't amused at this illumination, and tried to disabuse me of the notion.
In retrospect, I think I may have had a point.

that's a' beset wi' thorn and briar?
that is the Path of Righteousness
and few there be that there aspire
and see ye not yon wide smooth road
that winds across the lily leaven?
that is the Path of Wickedness
though many ca' it the Road to Heaven
and see ye not yon bonny, bonny road
that winds across the ferny brae?
that is the path to fair Elfland
there you and I this night maun gae
I think I know where you finally went...

Alone Together
Date: 2005-10-04 11:55 pm (UTC)From:Many of us non-religious-but-seeking-to-be-wise types often make the same mistake in a different dress. If everyone seeks the road less traveled by no one will ever find it, or more likely we will all end up perceiving that we are alone, together.
