Read it and Weep

I think my heart has taken up residence inside my molar. This can't be good.

In other news, the second series of Thomas Covenant books is much more engrossing than the first. Although the writing is ponderous and the use of three-dollar-words a mite pretentious, The Wounded Land is a rollicking good read. I'm glad I didn't give up after my last go-through of the first three books. My list of books for the year can be viewed here. I need to finish more before the year is up. Surely I can manage fifty.

This morning, because I was feeling so very, very blah, I bought myself a hat. It's a cute little black toque with tassels and a grey embroidered skull and crossbones. I'll have to get a picture of it. It actually looks good on me, unlike most knit caps. Maybe I'll even get the matching mitt, scarf, socks, and sweater, although I suspect I'd look very, very silly if I wore them all together.

Donaldson is a good read, but his works are full of some poisonous premises and grating themes. I find his philosophy of sacrificial altruism to be distasteful.

Aside from some modern Japanese fiction I was also reading at the time, the Thomas Covenant books were the most depressing I had (and have!) ever read. And yet I continued to buy more of the series, because I felt he'd treated the guy so badly in the previous book, he HAD to get something good at the end. I pooped out after the fifth, realizing NOTHING good was going to happen to him, everything would be jerked out of his hands just before fulfillment.

Too realistic. I gave up on them.
