shanmonster: (Don't just sing it--bring it!)
I thought I had kept myself in sufficient shape to jump back into kung fu without any repercussions. I thought wrongly!

Today, I'm so tired, walking normally is a tremendous task. I went to the gym this morning as usual, and had to quit just six sets in. I'm weak and trembly, like a newborn pony. Yikes! I just spent the last half hour lazing in a hot tub, reading The Power That Preserves. That helped. My muscles are grateful for the reprieve.

Last night, we basically did a half hour of nothing but ab stuff. We'd lie on our backs, legs straight, and feet about six inches off the floor. Then we'd move our legs in a variety of ways: up and down, in circles, open and closed, etc. All while our heels are well off the ground. And then we did some partner stuff. [livejournal.com profile] gha5t stood up by my shoulders, and I tried to double-kick him in the stomach. He'd catch my feet, and throw them back toward the ground, and I'd counter by trying to kick him in the stomach again. Well, we did fifty each of those, on top of everything else.

And then it was time to do kicking drills with a partner. I'd somehow forgotten about the bruising aspect of kung fu, and I have a real beaut, now. My elbow has all the beautiful blues, purples, and greens of an oily mud puddle. Brad can kick pretty hard, and I didn't quite get out of the way in time. My reaction time seems to have slowed during my time off.

The last third of the class was devoted to the Eight Elbows mantis form. It's a short form, but I still get bungled up on a couple of parts. I'll need to go over it step by step with someone, to make sure I'm doing it right. There are a couple of parts where I couldn't see how to follow along because of the sudden turns, and I'm sure the way I'm faking it isn't correct, but I can't remember how the transitions go.

When I got home, my hip flexors were so exhausted, I had a difficult time getting into bed. My abs are only now realizing that they're sore. It took a while for the pain to kick in. And when I was getting changed at the gym, [livejournal.com profile] raine_storm commented on the huge red spot on my back. That would be from where I was doing ab exercises and realized there was a rock under my back. I'm no princess with the pea, I guess.

This afternoon, I think I'll be going to a couple of thrift shops. I need to get a good bra base for my dance costume(s). The one I was going to use, [livejournal.com profile] f00dave deemed a poor fit. So it's off to find something less gappy. It's hard to find a good bra when your chest is as muscled and your boobs as small as mine is. I don't really have enough boob to push up in those push-up bras, but I need something with some sort of shaping that doesn't gape at the top when I flex. Hmm....

I like your boobies just fine! Especially in The Video That Shall Never Be Copied, Lest It Become The Next Star Wars Kid Thing. :-)

I'm still nursing a back injury from a hard kick that's kept me out of real kung fu training for almost a month. I'm a big proponent of light/no-contact sparring.

btw, an interesting ab exercise similar to the ones you have described goes like this. Lay on your back, with your legs vertical. A partner stands behind your head and throws your legs out and down towards the floor (forward, left, right, any which way they want). You need to stop your legs from hitting the floor, then put them back up in the upright position. Continue for a minute (that should be a good start for this ab killer).
