I was almost run over on the way home. I stuck my arm out ineffectually in a pathetic defensive gesture, but it must have worked. The speeding truck missed me by scant inches. The driver didn't even see me.

Although my heart was displaced (someone set it just below my epiglotis), I somehow made it home.

I think I'll go to bed now.

That must have been one impressive pathetic defensive gesture! Are Canadian truck drivers as methed up as many of their American counterparts?
