shanmonster: (For goodness sakes. I've got the....)
[Baubo: Goddess of dirty jokes]Oh dear. Someone new hates and confuses me. Here's what is posted anonymously in my guestbook:

you suck you sick hipotabiodid you are slowing down human evolution, skrew you, fuck you

Can you tell me what a "hipotabiodid" is? It's completely foreign to me. I'm betting it's a made-up word, like boky.

Also, while I'm making requests, can some classics geek tell me whether or not Baubo is one of the blemmyae? I think she is, but I've never heard mention of a connection, before.

probably she's not! the only explicit source for baubo is like the suda, which is not really a proper source. there are allusions in pausanias and clement of alexandria and some guy named arnobius, but they're way flaky. ANYWAY, i figure that originally baubo was a distinct humpin' goddess, sourced from the - i think! - sumerian bau. basically, she's really old. the blemmyae, by contrast, were probably invented about 100-200 AD by the romans, as a representation of some conquered/uncivilised race or another. possibly by the greeks, maybe a couple of hundred years earlier. if the two did get conflated, it'd be a later development, maybe down to christian writers like arnobius. plus they've not really much in common, aside from the chestfaces. baubo is about nookie, and i think the guy in the article you link is pretty much on the money when he says that the blemmyae were all about xenophobia. GOD! that was a mess. hope you can get some meaning out of it.

slowing down human evolution

Hurm. I think you've been accused of not breeding enough, or of not supporting human litters. One more good reason for me to keep reading your journal, then.

Do you suppose it was a really poorly-phrased come-on line?

*laugh* Now there's a thought! Maybe unconsciously, yeah, and wouldn't the writer be perplexed and deny that. Psychology and instinct are funny things!
