shanmonster: (Dance Monkey Dance!)
Yesterday, I booked a room for someone named Kaka. Today, I modified a reservation for a woman named Labia.

Oh dear.

I did a bit of poi today. The rhythm of the cross-over kick change is tantalisingly close. I'm almost there. I can almost taste it.

I'm sure I would have done better, but whenever I miss the kick, the poi strikes me right on the lovely shine welts courtesy of last night's kung fu class. It throws me off a little, as do the constantly roving people. I have to stop what I'm doing so no one gets bonked. I'm sure that would go over well....

Edit: Ouchies. The welt on my shin has turned into a throbbing goose egg. Hoorah!

Well, since Labia means lips, it isn't such a peculiar name for a woman... but what were her parents thinking?

Or maybe she adopted that name when she became a stripper or something. You could make up lots of fun stories about a woman with a name like that.

You know women named Lips?

No, not in this culture. But I have come across a number of names in my Oxford Dictionary of First Names and in anthologies of myths and legends from many cultures that highlight a specific feature of a woman.

examples: Alka, an Indian name, means 'a lock of hair.'
Abla, an Arabic name, meaning 'a full, fine figure'
Basim, an Arabic name meaning 'a smile'

And of course there are many, many female names that directly refer to feminine beauty. Lips seem to me to just be an extension of that. I'd expound on it more but it's time for me to go back to work! :)

I'd like to see a video of the particular move you're practicing. Know of any?

I've never seen anyone do it before, so as far as I know, I'm making it up. I'll try to get a video, as soon as I have it working properly.

Cool. I look foward to it.

I'm almost completely self-taught with poi. I've only seen three or four people use poi, and have had only a couple of movements demonstrated to me. I'm putting a lot of what I know from dance and kung fu into my studies. The kick changes, for example, must be properly chambered, as in martial arts. Otherwise, they don't work properly.

I expect that I can take what I've taught myself with poi and apply it to nunchaku, 3-sectional staff, butterfly swords, and chain whip.

What you've taught yourself can probably be applied to wielding them, but probably not to fighting with them. The dynamics of fighting with weapons (especially against other weapons) is dramatically differet, as you may well know.

Oh, definitely.

Hmmm... somehow I feel somewhat responsible for the goose egg...

I blame your bony, bony elbow on my shin lump, but take full responsibility for the little black bruises on my other knee. That was from ramming full force into the corner of my desk. Do not do this, yourself. It's just no fun.

Those desks are soo evil. But you must remember that they are nothing more then the lackey to the supreme ebil. Thats right, I said it. The supreme EBIL!!! Fear the groove. *does some weird stuff with his fingers*
