shanmonster: (Don't just sing it--bring it!)
You know how people say the appendix is a useles organ, and that it is residual? How we've evolved past our need of it?

Well, what if it's the other way around?

What if we've actually only recently evolved the appendix, and are working our way towards needing it?

Maybe it's the exact thing we need to drive those flying cars of the future.

The same goes for other "useless" body parts, like the pineal gland.

In other news, last night's kung fu class was great. For the first time in over a year, I felt halfway competent. I did my best fook fu in a long time. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but I didn't goof up any of the movements. I didn't rearrange bits of it. It just flowed.

Also, my low arrow stance is as perfect as I think I could ever do it. We practiced holding a arrow stance followed by an explosive kick from the rear leg landing in another low arrow stance. It's really hard to get any sort of speed and power when you're that low, but by the tenth kick, I think I had it.

And then we did kicking drills. We each stood with a wooden chair in front of us, back facing us. We stood with our left foot forward and between the back legs of the chair, toes under the chair. From there, we each did one hundred front kicks, chambering the kick, then kicking out over the top of the chair, rechambering, then placing the foot back down between the chair legs. Chairs were flying everywhere at high speeds. I managed to do all one hundred without knocking the chair over, although I did accidentally touch the chair with my foot three times. Afterwards, my hip flexor felt very ... interesting. I expect it to feel extra-interesting come Saturday!

I know I haven't been doing any kung fu per se for the last two months, yet last night, it was as though I hadn't been away, but had actually been training all the more. My intuition tells me that the Body Flow class I've been attending has something to do with my kung fu successes of last night, but I couldn't tell you how. Yes, I work strength and flexibility there, but how is it helping me remember forms which have given me grief for years? How is it giving me explosive power? Hmm...

And now, if you'll excuse me, I must get ready to go off to the gym. I'm doing Body Flow and Body Pump back to back.

It's called "training by omission". i experience a fair bit of that in fencing. taking a break seems to give things a chance to settle down. I have been known to stop fencing for a month, come back and be a lot deadlier than before.

It's also, apparently, how I learned to do a particular dance move which had been eluding me for months. I tried it for a couple of days, and couldn't get it to work. Then I completely forgot about it for about four months. Then, while walking home, I remembered the move, and realized I knew how to do it. And then I did it, as though I'd been drilling all those months. Weird....

makes perfect sense to me.

Penial glands

Your body would be in really sad shape if someone stole your penial gland... which might make a good plot.

Homologous structures in other species are more exposed to the surface of the animal and are light sensing organs.

Very interesting! Thanks!

I know I have always felt like a throwback mutant
ever since they took my tonsils, my uvula, and my
one of my adenoids. I think the lack of uvula would
preclude me from zero-G habitats.

I have no tonsils, either. Doesn't that make us prone to Parkinson's Disease?

What?! You're kidding...aren't you?

Body Flow and Body Pump back to back? You must have a death wish! My muscles are screaming on your behalf!:)

Body Flow made my body start to flow. Stupid menses of doom!

Curses! Damn menses! Shoo bees! Shoo!

Amen to that. That's the second time this month. My body's trying to synchronise with Kathryn's, and now that I'm away again, it'll happen all over once I move back. Yay.
