shanmonster: (Is that CLEAVAGE???)
I just got back from my first t'ai chi chu'an class in several years. We went through the 108 forms. I'd actually never made it all the way through before, so I was faking my way through it. And I learned that I've become competent at faking my way through forms/choreographies. If nothing else, I've become adept at following along. It was also nice to be able to recognize parts of the form (which I'd never done before) by way of my experiences in kung fu.

[livejournal.com profile] f00dave, since you're going to be doing this regularly up until September, it's your duty to get the form down pat so you can reacquaint me with it when you join me in Kitchener. Ha!

f00 will also be doing the Chi Gong and meditation classes each Saturday. I can't afford to do it. It's much cheaper for him as a member of the club ($15 for four weeks, versus $50 for me).

Sifu Martin and Sifu Mary say they might be able to put us in touch with some good instructors in Kitchener. Excellent.

Addendum: I tried faking my way through the Crane form last night at kung fu, and once those cranes started flying through the air, I was lost. So aerial bits still elude me on the fly (heh).

Alas, it took us about two years to learn the form thoroughly, and I think we're doing the short form. Our teacher is VERY thorough. But I love it; it's really made me a better dancer (balance issues), and I've certainly stolen parts of the form to put in sword dances and the like.

I appreciate the thoroughness of a good t'ai chi chu'an instructor. If I can't find the kung fu classes I'd like to take in Kitchener, maybe I can find a good t'ai chi chu'an school.

Qigong

Who is Dave doing the Qigong with? I took a weekend workshop two weeks ago w/an instructor from Fredericton named Chok C. Hiew and loved it! I have been pretty good at doing the Hexagram form most mornings since. There is a group of us from the workshop who will meeting every Monday evening over the summer to practice together starting this Monday.

This will be with Martin Kennedy. I've heard good things about Dr. Hiew, though ... I wonder if he's going to be offering sessions before September? -looks- Thanks for the reminder! ;-D

Is Dr. Hiew a psychology professor, by any chance?

"Chok C. Hiew is a professor of psychology at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada." (from http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/cfq/biosketchweb.htm )

So, yes!

However, this page lists him as "Chok C.Hiew, Ph.D. Professor of Health Psychology, UNB Canada"

Why do you ask?

It ends up that he was one of my Psych 1000 teachers. I don't know what his qi gong classes are like, but I didn't mind his psych classes.
