I have a job.
I think.
It would be for Ontario Power Savings Corporation. Basically, what I'd be doing is going from door to door getting people to fill out paperwork. Pretty shitty, hmm? Here's how it goes, from my odd recollection. Gas/hydro prices have shot up over 500% in the past few years. I'd be getting people to fill out some paperwork which locks them into a fixed rate, so their prices do not increase for the next five years. There is no charge for the service.
It is strictly commission work. I was told that no one gets fewer than ten people to do the paperwork in a week, and that ten people gets you a thousand dollars. So in theory, I'd be making a minimum of a thousand bucks a week. On top of that, as an incentive, once you've passed your probation period, you get sent on 10-day vacation trips. For instance, I'd be going to Hawaii at New Years, if I stuck it out. And if I stuck it out, I'd be up for promotion and a significant raise.
I'm dubious. Where does all this money come from?
Maybe they're heavily subsidized. And what if all these fine perks are an incentive to keep people working what is most surely a hellacious job? It's like the equivalent of danger pay. If I really could make that much money, I'd be debt-free within the year. Hell, I'd be debt-free in a few months.
Whoa.
So I can give it a shot. If I don't like it, I'll leave. If I don't do as well as they assure me I will, I'll leave. And if I get offered the gym job, I'll leave and take that instead. Because the gym job, although it likely pays shite, is what I'd rather do.
I sure do resent the need for money. I'm such a commie.

Apparently they had some problems with agents forging customers' signatures a few years back:

There's an account by someone who was solicited by an agent of theirs back in '02 here:

Not meant to dissuade you, just to give a better idea what it sounds like they're about.

Date: 2006-07-01 01:25 pm (UTC)From: (Anonymous)Sales/marketing can be a very lucrative job. If you decide to go with this, google up some sales tip websites. I like Guy Kawasaki's, but I have to do my own marketing and corporate contacts, still, he's a good read and a good place to start.
I am not now, nor have I ever been, Guy Kawasaki.
