As we walked along in our dance class clothes, some yobs leaned out the window of a pickup truck and shouted, "UGLY BITCHES!!!" This set us off in gales of laughter. I suspect our hecklers were very rude gay men.
After our delicious Hong Kong-style bubble tea, which I'd been craving for two months, we got dolled up and went to see The Devil Wears Prada.
It's the first time I've ever dressed specifically for a movie.
Although I've actually become accustomed to guys scoping us out (a big change for me from being derided as the homely, scrawny, weird chick in high school), the effect of us sashaying down the street in our metallic silver gowns was astonishing. I was afraid there'd be a car accident, because male drivers simply were not watching the road as they crept past us. It was also evidently prom night, as we saw scores of pastel-clad girls with their tux-wearing escorts. These girls stared, too, and not in a catty way. Passers-by on the sidewalk were coming to full stops, then turning, mouths agape, as we strutted by.
Ugly bitches, indeed.
The movie was pure feel-good fluff, but entertaining. Meryl Streep did a fine job, and Anne Hathaway is too cute for words. Not bad for a "fat" chick ('zif!). Hmm. Is she typecast as the ugly duckling, I wonder? What else has she been in besides The Princess Diaries?
The Devil Wears Prada is pure, escapist fantasy, of course. No one is as saintly as Hathaway's character. Even happy, smiling Buddha himself wouldn't have put up with the shit she shrugs off then rewards in the course of the movie.
...
Ugh. I need sleep. I'm so tired, I feel drunk. And I really need to get more rehearsal time in tomorrow. G'night.
