Is a toadstool named because it looks like something a toad would sit on, or because it looks like something that came out of a toad's arse?
Ever have one of those little pus pimples start oozing, and then when you go to scratch it, discover what looks like a beautiful piece of amber? Maybe this is why a carbuncle is both a horrible sore and a jewel of great value.
Today, I finally discovered what really, really squicks me. During a demonstration of how to sharpen gravers, we were shown how to ascertain if they're sharp enough. Drive the graver across your thumbnail and see if it peels a little string of nail off. God! I just shuddered from the very act of writing and thinking about that! Ugh! Watching it being done made me tremble and whine, too. Geep. I've finally found my trigger. Blech. Blech.
