shanmonster: (Peeking)
Grr. I am so peeved.

I just typed in a big entry, and when I clicked on the tab to bring it back to add more to it, Firefox's new feature killed it. Since when did they start putting X closer thingermabobs on their tabs? What a terrible idea, when there are many tabs, and when middle-clicking on it before is enough to close it. How can I get rid of this noxious feature? Bah!

I'll try to recap what I wrote.

I haven't been getting much dance practice in over the past few days. I've been spending almost all my time escorting f00's mom around. We've been frequenting a lot of Asian restaurants (Niko Niko - Japanese sushi, Zen Garden - Japanese/Chinese vegetarian, Pho Dau Bo - Vietnamese pho), and today we'll be dining at Masala Bay (Indian cuisine). Asian food is pretty novel to her, and she's finally getting a handle on how to use chopsticks.

Last night, while stopped at an intersection, a tall, slim Asian man walked across in front of us. "Hey," f00's Mom said. "Isn't that our waiter from the Zen place? He's ... oh, never mind. I guess those people all look alike, anyway."

I didn't know what to say to this, so I kept my lip buttoned.

In any case, the Asian experience continues this evening with a dance performance in Toronto: Janak Khendry Dance Company's Chandrakauns, Dream of a Drunken God and Gayatri. I scored complimentary tickets. Huzzah!

Mark Balahadia: Male Belly Dancer: The dancing's ok, but what the heck is he wearing? Yikes! I think he attends the Jillina school of distracting costumes.

Gym, Jews don't see eye to eye: Orthodox school doesn't want its students seeing Pilates classes, so insists gym frost its windows. Gym people don't like the resulting dark studio space. Wacky ethical hijinks ensue (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] gha5t).

Hong 10 Floorwork: Bboy demonstrates how to do a nifty floorwork combination. I'd like to do it, but my carpeted floor is problematic. I imagine rug burn to the crown of my head would be a real bitch.

Well, time to go shopping again.

Toodle-oo!

If you have a lot of troubles creating an entry through Firefox/browsers, I'd highly suggest checking out Semagic, then. It's a program specifically for Livejournal and works very much like a word processor. Once you're done typing a new entry, there's the option to save the post for a later time or just post it right there.

This is the only time I've ever had a problem.

I checked out the guy's dance that you posted and scrolled down to see what else was linked on YouTube and found this gem :)

That's Mezdeke Show!

Mark, BTW is a regular on Bhuz. He was pure flamebait at the beginning, for wearing skimpy costumes, being overly flirtatious and touchy while dancing and generally portraying himself as the best thing to happen to dance since the zil, but he seems to be firmly in with the regulars over there now. I remember one big brouhaha once where they all jumped on him for linking to his draaaaama filled lj from his professional dance page.

He's really just a kid!

oh! is he they boy from Texas?

I remember all the drama on tribe.net that he stirred up and whining saying that he was being put down because someone had said they didn't like seeing a guy wear a bra top and just copy the dress of the girls...

he looked different in that video then one I'd seen off tribe or maybe I just saw photos on tribe but didn't realize it was him!

He's Maryland/DC area. Maybe that's someone else?

I like Mark. I used to like to watch him get the old guard into a tizzy. He is a good dancer, too.

Yikes! That's a pretty unfortunate thing for someone to say.

My own mother has embarrassed me by saying something similar in front of my husband:

"I was at the counter and then this Ching-Chang-Chinaman comes over..."

I wanted to wretch. I was so mortified. I was just thankful it wasn't in front of my brother & sister in-law; she is Chinese.

I don't think my MIL meant anything nasty, by it. She's pretty naive, and I don't think she's met many Asians.

If anyone all looks alike to me, it's middle-aged to elderly white people! So many men look pretty much the same, with their doughnut haircuts, beer bellies, and almost identical fashion sense. And the women with their short, grey hair, frumpy, floral prints, and 80s-style earrings. It's creepy....

I am going to be a long-haired old lady in weird clothes. Otherwise, I might not know who I am when I look in the mirror. Heh....

RE: Firefox.

I can mumble some stuff about user testing at NASA and stuff, but yes, for current users, the new tab stuff is annoying. There's lots of pages on how to get the Ol' Skool style back; Lifehacker's page (http://www.lifehacker.com/software/firefox-2/geek-to-live-top-firefox-2-config-tweaks-209941.php) also has other cool tweaks.

Mark's outfit: *Sigh* Artistic rights and all, yet....no. Sort of Indian-by-way-of-MAri Hari-esque, I'd say.

I haven't found my copy of Bert's book yet, but a friend has a copy -- heck, it might even be my copy, now that I think about ti! Hopefully I'll have you some scans before the end of the year....

Not so much user testing by nasa, but that the close button on every tab has been a pretty popular feature on some of the most-used extensions; I'm very fond of the close button, myself.

I can really see how it would be problematic if you're not used to it, though.

True, true, and that was the core idea, I agree. And yet, they really did get user testing by NASA, I promise. *smile* From a ZDNet article (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6129141.html) on Firefox2:
"NASA Ames recently did cognitive modeling for us on tabs. Not only was the 'close' button on a tab quicker, but people would be more accurate. They also gave us good data on how wide tabs had to be before people clicked on the wrong one."

The NASA results also convinced Mozilla developers that people will inevitably close the wrong tab at some point, no matter what. That led to the creation of an "undo close tab" feature. "It will reopen the tab you just closed, and if you had written anything into a form on the site with that Web tab, it will restore that info as well," Beltzner said.

Yeah, not denying the NASA testing. Just some of the reasoning for the change. :P

I don't know where to begin with Mark's outfit. The shorts under the skirt, the unflattering bra top, the beads that flop around like a big ol' dick.... Yikes.

The new tab stuff is very annoying. Yesterday I closed yet another tab by trying to open it. Gah. I'll have to figure out how to disable that pesky X.

What's the name of Bert's book?

To set the firefox tab behaviour back as close to 1.5 as possible:

Open 'about:config' in a new tab.
Set browser.tabs.tabMinWidth to 30
Set browser.tabs.closeButtons to 3

Google 'firefox 2 config tweaks' for more settings.

Good luck.

Was Ma f00 just kidding or being sarcastic? I say it all the time to our Korean, Mexican, Chinese, Indian, German and PVA students - lightens the mood around here since the new boss arrived.

Nope, that's just absent-minded normalness for the area they live in. The Martimes are a black hole in many ways. -shrug-
