shanmonster: (Don't just sing it--bring it!)
I just received my first photo from the shoot last night, as taken by Rick Crampton.

[Shadow Figure]

I thought the background was too cold and dingy in contrast, so I fiddled with the colours a bit. I prefer this sort of look.

[Shadow Figure]

That's really nice.

And I like that (dance?) pose, and it's interesting with the shadow (which, of course, I'm assuming that was the intent).

While you look awesome in color I think the few B/W I've seen of you are more dramatic and less...less "vanilla" (I suppose that's what I'm looking for).

Although I like the dramatic shadows cast by this light, it's not my favourite colour. It's too cold for my liking. I'm betting that if this were monochromatic that it would be more interesting, and not necessarily black and white, but perhaps something a little more sepia in tone....

I'm no photographer but...

..for color shots I think I prefer a more natural pose in a more natural setting (possibly with some simple prop or another (veil/column/vase/etc.)). Dramatic poses seem to require more dramatic lighting and I seem to prefer B/W's or (as you've reminded me) Monochromes for those.

A warmer colored light would bring out the deeper skin tones, I would think, and enhance the flowing lines and curvature of the body being photographed.

I've only had a few chances to actually see some of your modeling work you've posted links for (this POS computer hampers me greatly) but I've really enjoyed what I've seen. You seem to have a natural grace and an enjoyment of, and for, your art. I'm sure the martial arts training and the work-outs as well as the various style dances you do have only enhanced your modeling ability.

You have abilities (and a body) to be proud of.
Wow...I really ramble when I'm stoned. Sorry

Awesome butt!

P.S. How long did you have to hold that pose?

Date: 2006-12-08 01:09 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com
Thanks!

I didn't hold poses for more than a few seconds. By the middle of the shoot, I was moving pretty much constantly, albeit slowly, with pauses when I thought something was more "photo-friendly."

Interesting

Interesting, I've never seen Kathakali or any other South Indian dance form performed in the nude, except in temple carvings. Perhaps you should go to India and apprise them of this modern variation...I'm sure it would go over well, especially in Tamil Nadu, and you wouldn't have to go to the trouble of learning how to fold the appropriate saree for the various dramas.

(Incidentally, if the photographer were to work parallel with wall, the shots might take on a frontal frieze-effect reminiscent of temple carvings).

I've never studied any Indian dances, and would never claim to be an Indian dancer in any capacity. I have a rudimentary understanding of some mudras, mostly because quite a few are also included in Romany dance. As far as posing goes, the Indian-looking hand seem to be a logical extension to my more martial hand positions.

You claim that you've never studied any Indian dances, yet on this Shanmonster page
http://www.shanmonster.com/archives/20010526.html
you state your interest in expanding your knowledge of Indian dance, and you also reference two books (one of which is on Bharatanatyam)relating to the subject. In my view, this indicates at least some degree of study in regard to Indian dance. Do you contend that you suddenly dropped this interest from five years ago?

I wouldn't say I've dropped the interest, but it is certainly on hold. I did get Dances of India - Learning Bharata Natyam video, but it's really quite terrible, so I didn't use it. Aside from skimming the video once, my only real exposure to Bharata Natyam has been seeing three or four performances of it. I can't claim to have studied the dance based off just this.

If I discover a good bharata natyam teacher in the area, I'd love to study with him/her. I think it's a gorgeous dance.

Excellent! Why don't you come to India and take some dance lessons? As I understand, it takes 6 years to master bharatnamya, but there are many schools (such as in Mysore) where you can take lessons for a few weeks and have a strong skill in different dance forms. Your dance style is somewhat of a fusion, and a few months in India might be great for your oeuvre. To hell with working fast food jobs in Canada...take some time and adventure!

Once the moderator ([livejournal.com profile] snowy_kathryn) is finished her homework, she says she'll be putting lots of material up on the community.

You have some very fine lines, Madame. You look like a piece of classical Greek statuary. I am in awe of your kinesthetics.

Thanks!

I'm lit with a spotlight and am standing very close to the backdrop to ensure a the crispness of the shadow.
