The False David: Wow. I want to do this. I especially like the parts where he's down on the floor in his Japanese skivvies. He has some serious strength and control. Quoth
snowy_kathryn, "I think I hate butoh."
Compare and contrast with Rachel Brice's recent performance in Sydney. She shows equivalent strength and control, but that's the end of the comparison.
Now, how the HECK does one fuse butoh with belly dance? I suspect it might be like trying to mix beer and corn flakes. Doable, but not at all appetizing.
When I performed with Drums & Machines and with Freaky Scene a few years back, I did mix them a bit. Well, I'd had no training in Butoh at that point, but I believe I was doing something very similar, pulling it from some part deep within. And I mixed it with zaar movements. I'd like to think it worked, but I don't have video proof. Although the performance was videotaped, the lighting was atrocious and all that can be seen is a slight shadow in the darkness from time to time. It's completely unviewable, and it's a bloody shame. I have no idea what it looked like at all.
Today's performance will be nothing like that. It will be short and, if all goes as planned, lovely and sad, in a wistful, yearning sort of way.
