shanmonster: (Spasmolytic)
My dentist appointment was once again full of nasty surprises. The grinding I've been doing in my sleep has badly broken two fillings. Because one of the breaks is very close to a nerve, I may need a root canal. Plus I need to get the fillings replaced.

And then there's the enormous cavity in my wisdom tooth.

It necessitated an extraction.

So here I am with a sore, throbbing, bleeding hole in my head, stoned on painkillers. My extraction was difficult. Thanks to my Innu heritage, I have Innu teeth. Did you know Eskimos have three roots in their molars instead of the usual two?

I did, and when the dentist said extraction, I knew I was in for a rough ride.

I was not mistaken. I warned the dentist, and he didn't seem worried, but then the wrestling began....

I thought it would never end, and the cracking noises, crowbarring off the roof of my mouth, and frequent changes to implements providing "more pressure" made me remember that one of the rooms of hell is decked out like a dentist's office.

Here's hoping the painkillers do their job well....

So it was more like a dis-appointment...

Except for a wing of cells where they keep the bad dentist fetishists locked up, with hourly headlines of what's going on everywhere _else_ in Hell. With a few scanty decor/fashion assessments in the last paragraph.

Exactly....the Hell's Waiting Room wing.

Oh no. There's also a room decked out like speedy checkout at a busy grocery store during Christmas season where you're the cashier with a urinary tract infection. I've been to that room, too.

I'll endevor to avoid that room in the future. Oh...and it seems my original post is missing an "in". So here's a spare: in

Root canal... D: Oh, the pain. Mostly in the wallet. It didn't hurt as much as I thought it would, but after the crown and everything, it cost around $2300-$2400. I hope you can avoid it!

I was about to say that I always hear Canadians talk
about tooth extractions a lot more than Americans,
and perhaps now I know why. In the US, *if* you're
lucky enough to have dental benefits, a root canal
and crown "only" costs about 500USD.

A lot of people I know get root canals in their early
20s, because that's the first time they've got the
benefits and can afford it. A coworker/lover of mine
got something like four crowns at one time as soon
as we both got our first real job. However, she was
from Russia, where they didn't have the Communist
plot to put flouride in their water, so perhaps my
data is skewed.

I really couldn't afford it, but it was either that or lose the tooth and that prospect just utterly horrified me.

I think I fear being toothless almost as much as I
fear not having my genitals. I had so many teeth
extracted as a child, and had braces for so long,
that I still occasionally have dreams about losing
all my teeth.

Same here... my mouth was overcrowded and I had a lot of horrible head-crunching extractions. My tooth nightmares can get so horrid that for a while I was afraid to eat apples or toffee because I had this fear that my teeth would break or be ripped out! Imagine my utter horror when I lost a filling, which broke off a chunk of tooth with it (it was this one that eventually had to get the RC), while eating a caramel. I thought my nightmares were coming true! D:

Yikes! The dentist told me around $600 for a root canal. Here's hoping I do not need one.

oral surgery

Date: 2007-01-11 03:51 am (UTC)From: (Anonymous)
I had a series of oral surgeries about six years ago. I got through them by taking a heavy dose of painkillers BEFORE I went in. Helped my mood, made the novocaine and nitrous less urgent, and took care of the "wait" between the office and the pharmacy.

In case you have to do it again. Good Luck...

I had no idea I was in for an extraction, or I would have done just that. I thought I'd just be getting a filling or two.

Here's hoping the painkillers do their job well....

make sure to up your fibre otherwise other holes in your body may not fair so well since many pain pills tend to constipate (I only mention this because of my double pain after getting my wisdom teeth out and looking bruised as fuck for two weeks).

just pretend you're a real stoner and rent something like 40 yr old virgin and sit around hepped up on goofballs.

heal quickly!

I'm debating what to watch tonight. I have a shitty old vampire movie and a movie based on a comic book based on a video game. Both sound suitable stupid!

Ouch! :-( Hope you'll feel better soon! Do you get a toothguard? I grind my teeth in my sleep, too. I have been prescribed a toothguard now.

Date: 2007-01-11 11:02 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com
I've been doing pretty good for the past week at not grinding my teeth, I think. I convince myself while falling asleep that I won't do it, and I don't do it. Let's see if I can keep it up. I don't want to wear a toothguard, if I can help it.

Does it make you drool more in your sleep?

Date: 2007-01-12 08:03 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] daughty.livejournal.com
Hm, my Significant other has not noticed any drooling so far. However, when I wake up I have a pretty "dry mouth". Better than losing my teeth to grinding though - they are looking pretty awful from all the years of grinding.

Eek! You make me want to never go to the dentist ever again!

I'm sorry that your toothies hurt. Do you need anything? I make bitchin' mashed potatoes!:) Just say the word!

Date: 2007-01-11 10:39 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com
Bitchin' mashed potatoes would be AWESOME! I have some raw taters here, if you'd like some.

I gots lots o' tatties up here that desperately need to be used up. What time do you want your bitchin' mashed potatoes? I'll bring 'em down to you for your dinner.

Well, Dave gets home in about an hour. How's that sound?

Thank you!

Sounds good!

The number of roots in a tooth

Date: 2007-01-13 11:35 pm (UTC)From: (Anonymous)
My mutant wisdom tooth had six, I'll call them rootlets and the dentist
had to use a scapal. After the ordeal was over I chuckled and asked if it
was a complicated extraction.

I thought three roots for molars are normal.
