shanmonster: (Don't just sing it--bring it!)
I went to the gym today, where I cycled a stationary bike like mad. On the way back, I decided to stop in a little salon run by a cranky-looking Asian lady. I paid her money to tear the hairs out of my armpits.

Owie. OWIE!

In other news, I suspect I may be suddenly coming down with the plague which just as suddenly has stricken [livejournal.com profile] gha5t (who is currently busy trying to sleep it off). I get no such rest. I teach dance tonight. And again tomorrow night. And then I model on Wednesday night. Sigh....

In other news, I wrote some backstory for my Vampire character, Margd. You can read it, if you're a geek and so inclined.

Sickened by the atrocities of the French Revolution, Margd accompanies Malicus to Helsinki where he sets up a haven in a large mansion. She sequesters herself and sets about translating the book and examining the crumbling Latin note.

Realizing her analytical skills are less than they could be, she asks for Malicus’s aid in further developing her auspex. Thus fortified, she begins her studies anew, reinvestigating all of the recovered documents and items she’s gathered over the centuries.

The words of Anatole still haunt her: her affliction is a test from God. Since these afflictions are a clan trait, she decides to delve deeper into the discipline of dementation, hoping that this knowledge will reveal a means of staving off the inevitable changes. Although she does not discover any guaranteed way of keeping Elisabet away, she does manage to retain her own identity for the next hundred years.

Somewhat reassured that Elisabet’s reappearances are under control, Margd bids Malicus adieu and goes off in search of a mentor. She is desperate to regain the humanity she lost during the Paris prison break. She ends up once again in Budapest, where she discovers her mentor in an unlikely place: her childe Thomas.

Despite having been a consummate librarian for centuries, over the years, Paulus has developed a pathological dislike for books, and can no longer even abide being in the same room with them (his personal derangement). He has not been to the library in over a hundred years, and Thomas and Paulus have since become estranged from one another.

While her Paulus left the sanctuary of the library to become more embroiled in Camarilla politics and Kindred machinations (becoming an advisor to the Prince, aided by his eidetic memory), Thomas remained behind at the library and continued with his studies of humanity and redemption.

Thomas has taken to wearing white robes as an affectation. Margd is delighted to once again make his acquaintance, and stays with him in the library for several years, studying with him and maintaining a low profile.

Thomas is a difficult teacher to learn from. In the midst of talking, he often leaves off and stares off into space, or wanders off completely. His scatter-brainedness is frustrating, but Margd develops her patience. Eventually, she learns that when he leaves off conversation with her, it isn’t because of some sort of dementia, but because he is in an almost constant state of meditation.

Other Kindred also stay in the library, all with shaved heads, all in white robes, and all in an almost perpetual state of meditation. At first, she is wary of them and obfuscates herself whenever they come near, but after time, she realizes they share the common interest of humanity and occult studies. Indeed, the basement of the library is a treasure trove of occult knowledge previously unknown to Margd. Much of it is written in languages unfamiliar to her, like Egyptian hieroglyphics and Nepalese writings. Margd eventually reveals herself to them.

Fascinated, Margd asks Thomas what all of this means. Why the robes? What do the glyphs say? Thomas smiles and tells her to wait.

On the night she regains her lost humanity under his tutelage, Thomas tells her his secret. He is the Undying King of the Children of Osiris (from The Hunters Hunted, pp. 49-54), and the library is a Temple. He asks her to join them, and she responds by asking for time to reflect on this.

After more study, she makes her decision. Although she agrees with many of the group’s aims, she thinks there is something off with the underlying tenets and she demurs. She does not believe that the Followers of Set are the great evil the Children of Osiris believe them to be, but she is careful not to say this.

She believes the Children of Osiris, although having good intentions and a laudable amount of self-control and humanitas, are ultimately misguided. She believes that Golconda is the goal, and not the pursuit of Bardo and the subsequent denial of the Beast.

With reluctance, she leaves Budapest and the peace within the temple/library. She feels compelled to return to Malicus’s side, afraid that he may have done himself some harm in her absence.

Thomas is saddened to see her leave, and saddened that she did not join the Children of Osiris. But at the same time, he has the bittersweet knowledge that although she is not joining him, that she does share the common belief in the importance of retaining, and increasing, her humanity.

In the summer of 1850, Margd returns to Helsinki. On her way there, and after a great amount of thought, and despite her misgivings, she sends a letter of apology to Dracula. From her studies with Thomas, she now believes it is necessary to apologize to all she has wronged, no matter what their character. She isn’t foolish enough to leave a return address….

I enjoyed the back story.
Back in the late 70's I started playing D&D (later, AD&D and a few others). I played for about 10 years and loved to develop character histories. I'd have 3 or 4 versions of a character (different levels) representing different periods of their life (sometimes descendants) . Playing in the same circles week after week we all started to do it and developed this huge (albeit spotty) history of the great land of Ishtarn Aesch and its' long-lived line of heros.

The name Abraxas Rutrem was one of three characters (out of a hundred or more?) that survived from the very beginning and the only character that reached godhood.

Margd is one of my favourite characters I've ever played. It really helps that the game is a long-running one. It's always disappointing to invest so much energy into a character only to have the campaign fizzle within a month or two.

I have to do one more period of "blue booking": 1897-1990. I have some plans in mind already. I'll be creating another childe, and making up a character sheet for him/her. I suspect my 800-year old Margd won't want to leave her house much. She's become very anachronistic, and is rather frightened of all the technological doodads out there, like trains and electric lighting. A childe will give me a bit more room to move around and interact....

I find waxing almost cathartic, sometimes....

But it's true, the skin underneath your pits is awfully sensitive....

The last time I had my pits waxed, it wasn't nearly this bad. I suspect the wax temperature wasn't ideal, this time around. The waxer woman had a terrible bedside manner, too, so I won't be going back there.

I'm hoping my pits will be healed enough to wear deodorant by the weekend. They are still unhappy!
