shanmonster: (On the stairs)
Ok, I'm all caught up with the backstory for Margd. Now I have to make a character for her new childe, Magnus Brander.

In 1897, Margd flees Vienna with Malicus, going back to Helsinki to retrieve her books, once again riding on one of those trains. She tells Malicus and Kole that she is going to assume a new identity, as she has too many powerful enemies (including Dracula and possibly the Vienna Tremere chapterhouse).

She offers to renew the bloodbond with Malicus, as she has formed a genuine friendship and trust with him (whether he accepts is up to him!).

She tells Malicus and Kole that she is off to Canada to found a university, and that she will be taking the identity of Margot Kartoffel.

In 1898, she locates a rich family (the Branders) who wish to flee the country since they disagree with the apparent Russification of Finland. Rather than deal with this, they want to immigrate to Canada. She ghouls and bloodbinds the parents, ensuring she has someone to look after her in the daytimes on the long, Atlantic voyage. As she spends time with the family, the eldest son catches her eye. Magnus Brander is eighteen years old, and very astute for his age. After a brief stint in the Finnish military, he is looking forward to beginning his academic career in theology at McMaster University in Toronto.

They talk each night of the voyage, and Margd realizes with some amusement that the young Magnus is falling in love with her. She encourages this devotion, as it has been a very long time since someone has shown such feelings toward her. It awakens a certain aspect of her humanity she had nearly forgotten. When they land at the Halifax Harbour, they arrange for a romantic assignation in a lovely hotel, and she embraces him.

From Halifax, Margd travels with Magnus and his family to Hamilton. She relies on Magnus for his more modern understanding of the world, and while he takes care of the night-to-night business (like maintaining the holdings, acting as messenger, taking care of the ghouls, and hunting for vitae), she busies herself with setting up a haven and power structure dedicated to education and philanthropy.

Her first step is to ghoul Andrew Carnegie in the early 1900s. He goes on to fund/create the Hamilton Public Library. She then ghouls Howard P. Whidden, an early chancellor of McMaster University, and through careful manipulation of philanthropists and Baptists in the city, sets the stage for the university to move from its original home in Toronto to Hamilton in 1930. Whidden quickly becomes Margd's favourite and most capable ghoul.

Margd/Margot and Magnus make their haven inside McMaster Divinity College.

Whidden's son, Charles Ganong, goes on to form Canada's largest chocolate factory. Under the auspices of Whidden, the money from Ganong's and the university keeps her people safe from the horrors of the Great Depression, and for the first time, Margd finally has resources and a somewhat peaceful existence.

Although she does not speak of her personal history or lineage, Margd/Margo Kartoffel assumes her role in the Camarilla, becoming Malkavian primogen, and an Elysium is established in the Hamilton Public Library.

The onset of the world wars horrifies, but does not surprise, Margd. She has seen it all before, of course, with the Crusades. While the world goes to hysterics around her, she works hard at maintaining a balance of peace within her holdings. She asserts to the Prince that the campus is off-limits for hunting. In exchange for this boon, she acts as his advisor from time to time.

Mindful of her ties to Malicus, Margd ensures that the university establishes a school of experimental medicine. She uses the bloodbanks from the university hospitals as her source of vitae, which lets much of the pressure off Magnus, allowing him more time to pursue his own interests.

Once all the groundwork has been established for her demesne, Margd resumes her studies, delving deep into the Incunabulum Kupalum. She researches this book for thirty years, deducing the significance of the wards, and developing a keener understanding of Kupala. During this time, she slowly brings Magnus into her studies, educating him in Kindred history and the occult. He is an apt student, indeed.

In 1961, this understanding gained by her studies of the Incunabulum Kupalum both horrifies and spurs her on in her studies of humanity. She now believes she can only gain the necessary understanding to prevent the rising of Kupala by attaining Golconda.

The next thirty-five years are spent further developing her virtue of conscience. She remains woefully anachronistic, and depends upon Magnus to explain the exigencies of modern living.

1) Cool story.
Why is it so difficult for Margd to "catch up" with history?
Something about her or her history or is it something you need for the storyline?

2) Cool Icon.
Sexy.

1) Margd is 800 years old, now, and has spent much of that time with her nose jammed in old books. She's still reeling over the concept of trains and electric lighting, let alone all this newfangled stuff like ICBMs, the internet, and monster truck rallies. I have the sneaking suspicion she won't get out much, anymore, hence the necessity of creating a childe who can and will.

2) It didn't feel terribly sexy sitting on that filthy staircase, let me tell you!

1) Ok. Some of that I now remember from an earlier post.

2) Didn't realize it was you at first. Really like the lighting and its' play on the curves but I think I've had this ramble here before.

I'm surprised Magnus hasn't turned on her yet (oop! planting seed for malkavian paranoia)

I like that she built a power structure through philanthropists and universities, that's the first time i can recall hearing that approach.

He could turn on her, yet! But if it happens, it will be during game play, and not through background writing.

The philanthropic approach makes the most sense, considering Margd's character. She really is a goodygoody.

Magnus, however, is not.
