shanmonster: (Dance Monkey Dance!)
Today we get to see Fred Astaire work with the ambience of a room (ambience in the Bas Rutten sense of the word). The man dances like movement is an afterthought. He just floats around without even the slightest perceivable effort. Wow.

Don't forget Mr. Kelly...

It was because of this sequence that I half-expected The Kurgan, from Highlander, to break into a dance when he was checking the balance of his modern, takedown sword.

this, and the opening to an American in Paris, are two of my favorite pieces (well, and the opening to White Knights). They are why I went to college for dance, and why I still stretch every morning. I never will, but oh...I want to move like that.

Have you seen the movie version of Finian's Rainbow? even with a cane, he (and Hermes Pan) kept on making with the beautiful moves...

Astaire and Kelly (and others)

Not only were they good, they made it look easy, effortless and most importantly...fun.

It's like their passion glows through and we get caught up in their ecstasy.

I also like how their dance and the music are integrated so seamlessly. There are many dancers out there who move well, but appear to be completely deaf to their music. I think dance ought to be more cognizant of external influence....
