shanmonster: (On the stairs)
First, [livejournal.com profile] snowy_kathryn got the flu. Now it's stricken [livejournal.com profile] f00dave. When I went to pole dance class today, I overheard fellow students talking about other people with the upchucks.

I don't want it, but if it must strike, it had better do it now. I don't teach dance this Friday.

On the more positive side, I got my hair done today. It's awesomecoretastic. Yes, it's that darned good. I don't have pictures yet, as my would-be photographers are too busy or too sick, but maybe I can get a shot tomorrow. It's a deep, chocolate brown with a 1-2" edge of brightest red. It's been a long time since my hair has looked so scrumptious. I sooooo hated the nasty blonde I was left with from the failed enpurpling experiment several months back. Gah.

Oh, and as for pole dance classes, they're going pretty well. I'm not looking like a total klutz anymore. Some of my spins are even, dare I say it, graceful. I still can't spin upside down while doing the splits, but that's fine. I'm happy enough with my newfound ability to do a basic upright spin (facing forward or backward) without breaking my kneecaps on the floor. I'm finally learning the control needed to ensure a gentle landing. Good thing, too, because I forgot to wear knee pads tonight.

My wing chun classes seem to be coming along ok, too. Well, there is this one combination which leaves me with a huge, virtual question mark floating over my head every time I try it, but a couple of parts of it are finally starting to click. I hope.

We stood in horse stance last night with staves balanced across our thighs. I started off really well, but honestly, I haven't been working my horse stance in wing chun with even one percent of the effort I expended in my Hung Gar classes. Suffice it to say I'm rusty.

At one point, my posture began suffering severely, yet the staff did not roll off my legs. This was because it was wedged under a belly roll. This is definitely not the right way to do horse stance, and was both comical and perturbing all at once. Eep.

Want some links? I've got some links for you, for I am the internet clerisy. Or something like that....

Call that humiliation?: Terry Jones, of Monty Python fame, waxes philosophical on the Iranians' treatment of British prisoners.

Teachers drop the Holocaust to avoid offending Muslims: "Some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial."

Kansas Board of Education Bans Pokémon: Similar to the previous story, but minus the Nazis.

New rule on tattoos gets under some Marines’ skin: If you die for your country, you'd better have a pristine corpse.

If We Taught English the Way We Teach Mathematics...: Is this the reason why I dread polynomials?

Keith denies snorting story: Which are you going to believe: Keith Richards snorted his father's ashes, or Keith Richards did not snort his father's ashes? I believe the latter is more unlikely.

Baby Cage: "Thank you BabyCage.net for this amazing baby cage! I used to have to resort to using physical violence in order to get my 4 year old to listen to me, but now whenever he is acting up I just put him in his cage for a few days. It is so much more effective than the belt."

The original broad is much more broad than the Daily Mail's version, at least according to the BBC story (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/6517359.stm). The slave trade, for example, also is raised as an important area which is being omitted. The report deemed that potentially offensive topics in general (and not those offensive to Muslims in particular) were being overlooked. Mind you it shouldn't be too surprising giving that it's the Daily Mail we're talking about.

#1 made me laugh and want to cry at the same time - it's funny and sad.
#2 made me angry...obviously.
#4 made me laugh and want to cry at the same time - yes, we should protect the "professional" image of the marines. You know, that image of them of people who kill other people while wearing shiny boots and silly hats...can't they wear long sleeves while working like everyone else in the world? And who cares what they wear when they work out? Do the marines share their gyms with civilians?
#6 reminded me of a story I'm sure I've already told you about the guy who ate small portions of his wife's ashes and had her head frozen.
#7 Baby cages exist! They're called cribs!

Oh come on (re: #2). I really don't think acknowledging the holocaust is pro-Israel. I'm all for schools being more critical of Israel's actions or any other group or aspect of history that tends not to get questioned very often, as well as paying attention to Muslim/Arab experiences, but I am very uncomfortable with holocaust denial being boistered in a school system.

It found some teachers are dropping courses covering the Holocaust at the earliest opportunity over fears Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic and anti-Israel reactions in class.

And if they do it should be discussed and dealt with, not avoided or pretending these students don't feel this way.

#1 made my day

The link for the tattoo article is defunct, but this article on the CNN site is still active. What a load of crap.

And: I love the town I live in, but living in Kansas really sucks sometimes. It's nice when another state pulls off some boneheaded scheme to pull the spotlight off, but inevitably it always comes back to shine on us. *sigh* We did just elect a new state school board (again) that revoked the ID bullshit (again) and put science back in the classroom (again). We'll see how long it lasts this time.
