Last night I got to practice gun disarming at my wing chun class. It's much easier than fighting someone who's armed with a knife. Not, of course, that I ever want to have to ever do either, but given a shitty, shitty choice, I'd rather be stuck in close range with someone with a handgun than someone with a knife.

I wouldn't mind taking a shooting course, sometime. I haven't fired a gun in about twenty years, and my firearms knowledge is both meagre and rusty. I do remember that I wasn't a terrible shot with a rifle, though. Maybe it runs in the family. My Dad was a sharp-shooter.

I sucked at archery, though. I wonder if I'd be better now that I've substantially upped my arm and grip strength?

Ok. Enough stalling. Time for me to get my nervous butt down to the dentist's....

I get much more stressed while practicing gun defense than knife defense, even though I know it is easier to deal with a gun. Knives are so damn tricksy, with their sharp edges everywhere slicing me as i try to get the knife out of their hand.

Still, I really enjoy getting that adrenaline rush in class from defending against weapons. (And it's nice to feel safer on the streets, but really I love that adrenaline).

Any dentist who isn't interested in your butt, nervous or otherwise, is focusing (properly) on the other end of your body. Hail from another dentist-avoider who avoided it for too long until yesterday.

Yay for lidocaine.

Everybody Wing Chun Tonight!

If your dentist gives you a hard time, you can always get all wing chun on his ass!

If you're ever on this side of the border (Detroit area) and have some extra time, I'd be happy to take you shooting. :) Substantial upper arm/grip strength not required.

If someone is infirm or has arthritis etc archery can be very, very difficult.
Shooting is quite fun and if one hasn't done it in a bit one can forget just how much fun it is. It can bond families also, a group sport mom, dad, and kids can all enjoy.

Ear protection and eye protection are a must.

I do think martial arts are good also, although I have to say that learning Tae-kwon-do the other students injured me more than I bet a mugger would, teeth kicked in, kicked in head. Purely accidental and I have to feel, all this time later, that the instructor is ultimately at fault for permitting sparring when there is little if any skill or control in the students so sparring.

A firearm is the true equalizer as they used to say.

Did they also teach you that most smart assailants with a gun are going to keep their distance so you can't disarm them?

Yep. I hope we cover distance work later....
