shanmonster: (Dance Monkey Dance!)
If all goes well, my site should be live again very shortly. Cross your fingers!

Also, I'm itching to go for an early-morning run, but I'm going to wait until [livejournal.com profile] snowy_kathryn's up so I can retrieve my mp3 player. I am a terrible runner, but I want to start running daily nonetheless. I figure a lap around the park will be a good start. And I'd better do it soon. It's supposed to be a scorcher today....

The dance performance went over fine yesterday, my embarrassingly hideous eyesore of a costume notwithstanding. [livejournal.com profile] snowy_kathryn looked much better! Much to my chagrin, my legs were completely wobbly and weak afterwards. I blame the month-long asthma attack for my weakness, and now that my lungs are on the mend, I hope to get my strength (and muscles) back posthaste. Here's a quick little clip of me coping with a costume malfunction while wearing this monstrosity yesterday. The music is "Ana" by Transglobal Underground.

If the video doesn't work now, give it a while. I just uploaded it, and it may take a while to "process" (whatever that means).

And I now have my mp3 player, so off I go! Wish me luck....

Oops! I guess that's what happens when I post before 6 in the morning!

That's what happens when I post without caffeine.

No caffeine here! Or rarely, rather....

Are you doing hip circles on your knees? That's really cool, I haven't seen much floor work in general, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen a dancer do that.

Yup!

It's a great strength-building exercise, by the way.

Hah! I bet. No wonder your legs were all wobbly afterward...

Except that, in theory at least, floorwork doesn't tire my legs out anymore. I can do backbends to the floor with little more effort than it takes me to lean forward to tie up my shoes.

I've noticed my muscles have been steadily weakening this month. I think it's because I'm not getting enough oxygen into them because my asthma's been so constant.

But I managed my run this morning, and it was my first time running in over a year, so I'm not ready for the glue factory yet!

Running sucks so much! :V Oh well.

I'm with you on that! I am such a shitty runner. And to think my Dad was a distance runner, back in the day. I take after him in pretty much every other way. Why not this one, too?

I on the other hand come from generations of laziness! Well, at least with regard to exercise for its own sake.

I am not at all looking forward to this heatwave. It's supposed to be 39 here today with the humidity, and hotter still tomorrow. How hot do you consider to be 'too hot to work out'? My gym does not have A/C, only fans. :(

Date: 2007-06-25 01:26 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com
I think it really depends on the person. Hydration is definitely key.

I've done heavy workouts under the sun, but I was drinking pretty constantly. I also did hot Ashtanga yoga, which was like doing a killer workout in a sauna. Brutal.

It doesn't mean I like it. Just keep an eye on yourself and make sure you're not showing any signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

I'm lucky in that my gym has air conditioning. My kung fu studio and dance studios do not, though. I rely on fans there.

The one good thing about working out in a hot environment is that it makes it a lot easier to work on your flexibility.

I'm going to give it a go and leave if I feel ill or faint. Last summer I couldn't hack working out in the heat, but I wasn't hydrating myself properly back then, so we shall see...

I hate working out when it's humid. 2 years ago I went to the gym, ate some lunch in a place with no AC then went to a greenhouse to buy plants. I almost passed out walking thru the greenhouse. I escaped thinking I could catch a breeze outside and then realized there was no breeze to be had. The shade of a twig was all I could find. I was so woozy and faint. That was when I decided to stick to swimming only in the summer.

Thanks!

Hope you don't mind...

...but I think the way you handled that "costume malfunction" was graceful and well handled, and I said as much in my fameorfamine.com blog. With a link to that video, and another performance.

I was thinking the same thing. I had to watch it a second time to see what you were criticizing (I mean, aside from the crayon-outfit).
