shanmonster: (Lost in a velvet morass)
I've suffered all night with absolutely crippling stomach cramps. I shuffle around the house like Ozzy Osbourne, because I can't stand up straight, and can't walk upright. I'm feeling a bit better now. I still don't know what sets these bouts off, but at least they're not daily like they were a decade ago.

Blargh!

In other health-related news, my big toe couldn't be broken. It feels almost completely back to normal. Of course, it's still swollen, but that's nothing new. It's been distended for about four years, now. Jeez louise.

My current project at school is yet another dance belt, and possibly even another dance bra. If my tummy wasn't so sore, I'd be crawling around on the floor plotting out my sewing. But it'll just have to wait. This project is for my surface design class. I've found a simple way to make a really spectacular bedlah. It will look almost like soft, textured armour. I'll post pictures when it's done, along with photos of the last couple of projects. We just need to get f00 to take their pictures while I'm modelling 'em!

Gee, hope you're feeling better soon.

Me too! I'm in a definite slump. When I went to the gym today, I pulled a muscle in my back/neck. Fuck! But my tummy is feeling significantly better....

Did you skimp on your warm-up, possibly?

I guess I must have.

What's a bedlah, anyway? Who'd have thought that belly dancing (it IS a belly dancing term isn't it?) would have so much jargon associated with it? One of the great things about LJ is the opportunity to learn so many nifty obscure things!

The main reason there is so much jargon associated with belly dancing (I prefer raqs sharqi), is because it's a Middle Eastern dance. Therefore, much of the jargon used is Arabic. Bedlah, for example, translates to "suit". It is the belt and bra outfit usually associated with Middle Eastern dancers.

Raqs sharqi translates to dance oriental. Raqs = dance, and sharqi = oriental, or eastern. There are other varieties of raqs, too, like raqs assay (cane dance), raqs beledi (country dance), etc.

Some of the jargon is North American in origin, though. One style of "belly dance" is ATS, or American Tribal Style. It has its own idiosyncracies.
