Does it make sense that I can be lactose intolerant only sometimes?

I've been fine with dairy all winter, but for the year before that, it bothered me. And now it's starting to bother me again.

I find my ability to cope with lots of dairy is hormonally related - I get all bloated and gassy from it while I have bees, and also right before.

A quick skim around PubMed suggests you're onto something. "Hypolactasia and metabolic changes in post-menopausal women."

Not that I'm suggesting anyone here is post-menopausal!

I go in cycles with dairy, too. It might not make sense, but it's certainly not impossible. I find that my lactose intolerance gets worse when I'm eating a lot of carbs. Sorry to hear you're having problems.

But you know, apart from the ice cream issue, I'd rather have milk in the winter anyway (hot chocolate! lattes! egg nog!).

Hot weather might aggravate it...

Definitely. I pretty much only get it when I'm going overboard with the cheese. Also, summertime seems to be worse than winter even when I'm watching my cheese intake.

Yup, I get this too, but usually with cheese.

Sucks when it happens with red wine, especially if it's at the same time as the cheese :( but all of a sudden I will not be able to drink red wine, killer headaches etc. then it like the cheese issues just go away.

it makes total sence. Our bodies adapt and un adapt like crazy. I'm now alergic to dust...whereas i wasnt before say maybe 3-4 years ago.

My sister cant drink pop during her period cause it gives her cramps on top of endometriosis

I've heard of people developing allergies suddenly, or loosing allergies over time

I popped in here via [livejournal.com profile] veritate's friends page. I hope that's alright!

It totally makes sense. I don't know whether this fits your situation, but people are often lactose-intolerant after a gastrointestinal illness - if your bowel mucosa have been stripped (as with diarrhea), the enzyme lactase is stripped too and needs time to rebuild. If you start too much dairy too soon after an illness, you can end up in sort of a vicious cycle. It takes several weeks after an illness to be ready for lactose again. When my husband came back from one of our trips to India he was much more lactose intolerant than usual for several months and wasn't back to 'normal' until he gave up dairy for a good 3-4 weeks. And apparently, pregnancy can increase your tolerance too.

It might be a quantity thing, too. I can have milk products up to a certain point. After that ... well, kaboom is a good word....
