This comes from an exchange I'm having with [livejournal.com profile] nymphie. She thinks chickens are funny and high kicks are uneconomical.

She's right!

Nonetheless, there is a chicken style of fighting: Xingyi.

Having grown up with poultry, I can assure you that chickens can have some seriously nasty fighting techniques. There's a reason cock-fighting has prevailed for so long. Although people think of chickens as being cowardly, I've seen birds out of bravery/stupidity take on opponents much larger than themselves. For instance, I had one evil rooster take on a pig which weighed about 1000 pounds. The pig ran squealing while the rooster raked it with vicious spurs.

Plus, if my memory serves me correctly (heh), one of the movement principles of kung fu is "break like a chicken." This is in reference to a chicken's ability to change direction suddenly and without warning.

But yeah, chickens are funny! They're freaking hilarious!

Anyhow, back to kicking. I've always been a high kicker. It runs in my family. The whole lot of us have pretty much effortlessly been able to kick as high as we can reach as long back as I can remember. Nonetheless, I agree with you on the efficacy of high kicks in general. It looks great, but lower kicks are faster and more powerful.

Still, I can't help but grin to remember an experience my sister had. Years ago, she worked at McDonald's, and one of her co-workers was always creeping her out with his advances. One night, it was just the two of them at closing time. She was in the back room counting stock or something, and he turned out the light and came in after her.

She kicked him in the head and smashed his nose.

Hee!
