Two things: I posted a link to the following story on FaceBook. Within minutes, the link was taken down.

Female Genital Mutilation at Cornell University: This story is horrific on many levels, and it's especially shocking that it's being done now. This sounds more like something that would have happened in the 1950s, around the time when so-called oversexed women were getting lobotomies to put them under control. Frances Farmer is rumoured to have received such treatments, and one of my university professors went to high school with a girl who was lobotomized because of her promiscuous behaviour.

So now little girls are being mangled and masturbated on a regular basis by an American physician to make them "normal" and less prone to lesbianism. What the jesusly fuck? I don't even know where to begin to say how this is wrong. There are just too many levels of wrongness.

And FaceBook removed my link to the story. Why am I being censored? Is FaceBook pro-mutilation?

I am perturbed.

Edit: The link is back up. It must have been a glitch in FB's system.

Incredible. I have a book about some of the horrendous practices inflicted on women in the 19th Century who dared to have sexual feelings (called A Dark Science) - that it could be going on now is shocking. But I gather - via another link someone posted recently - that some religious communities advise female genital mutilation, and I'm not talking in Somalia here, but in The US and Europe.

Oh, holy shit. I wanted to ask what the hell is wrong with Cornell's IRB (the group that reviews human research to make sure subjects' rights aren't being abused), but following some of the links it looks like they were never asked about the exams. Jesus.

...and that, right there, is failure to get full ethics approval, and is probably sufficient grounds for disciplinary action, not to mention pulling the funding.

No kidding. It's extremely serious. If they decide to interpret it that way.

That's... Really fucked up. The question, which has been asked in the comment thread on your linked article is, how the HELL did this get past ethical review?

Also, I think you're missing a couple of words here:
"and one of my university professors went to high school _____ who was lobotomized because of her promiscuous behaviour."

I am filled with so much rage right now that I really don't have the capacity to come up with anything constructive to say. D:

That is so wrong. How can any hospital allow such surgeries to happen there?

The woman who was lobotomised still
had enough willpower and creativity
to become a professor and teach?

Argh, no. I missed something significant in that sentence. Will go back and correct it.

One of my professors was friends with a girl in high school who was lobotomized for being promiscuous.
