I located my pattern and cut into the fabric. After a knock-down battle with my sewing machine, the coat is coming along just fine.

[Ghawazee coat]

I think I'll make bell sleeves instead of the standard draping ones. For trim, I'm thinking of using a subdued gold cord edging, and some sort of jacquard. Maybe in white? Hmm.... I'll play with it and see what I come up with. I like designing on the fly.

Pretty! Yes, bell sleeves would be nice.

I just hope I can do a good job lining it. I want it to look amazing. I have next to no experience with lining stuff.

It should be Pretty easy! I'm not sure how this one closes in the front or I could give you some more advice - also you already have it cut out, which can change things depending on how well fitted it is! For the sleeves, at least, I would recommend cutting them a little longer over your hand than you need, so you can fold/sew the cuffs down over the lining inside where it won't show or look as bulky. I have no idea if how I described hat makes any sense though -_-

I think gold trim will look really pretty though :D

I sure hope so! I want to do the fabric justice.

Man, that fabric is the bomb. I agree with you on the bell sleeves. That'll show the vine design nicely. Here is an old article from Threads magazine that walks you through inserting a bag lining into a jacket. Perhaps you could use some of the same techniques for the coat.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. I'm all trepidatious about the whole thing. Eee....

Linings aren't so bad. I've modified several unlined jacket and vest patterns using that technique.

Because of the way a ghawazee coat fits, though, you might consider forgoing the sleeve lining. Or line the sleeve separately, and then whipstitch the shoulder seams of the lining over the sleeve lining once you piece the garment together.

I'll try that. Thanks. I want the sleeves lined, for sure, because I want the inside of the bell ends to flash the satin lining when I move.

Ooh, thanks from me too. There are some better steps to that than I've done before.

.. and um.. jr high moment.. that "Stitch Opening Closed" pic is just all kinds of wrong.
